A Note from the Director

Fall brings the promise of things slowing down a bit as the weather changes and we spend more time inside. Ideally, that extra time is spent with a warm beverage and a good book! While all that is certainly possible, this October is PACKED with fun things to do – inside and out. I hope you’ll join us for a few of them!

Tonight, we are holding a reception for our Urban Sketchers Exhibition from 5:00 – 7:00pm. This exhibit is up through October 28 and features artwork from three Michigan-based Urban Sketchers chapters. Artists will also be gathering at the ACWL-Nuveen at 3:00pm this afternoon to sketch in downtown Whitehall before the reception if you would like to join them. If you can’t make it this afternoon the Urban Sketchers will be meeting again for a “sketchwalk” on Saturday, October 29th. Everyone is welcome, and the ACWL-Nuveen will be happy to set you up with art supplies to get you started!

Tomorrow - Saturday, October 8 - is the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Pumpkinfest! A local favorite, the Pumpkinfest is held in downtown Montague from 10:00am – 3:00pm. This year we are thrilled to be coordinating with the Chamber and Greenridge Realty on the Carved Pumpkin Contest. We encourage creative carvers of all ages to drop off their pumpkins at the tables outside of Greenridge Realty between 10:00-10:30am where Pumpkinfest attendees will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite! There will be awards given in youth and adult categories and voting will end at 12:30pm with winners announced at 1:00pm. We hope you and your family will take on the carving challenge and drop off an award-winning pumpkin!

Mark your calendar for Saturday October 15 for the Muskegon Arts and Culture Coalition’s – Tour the Town. A $5 ticket will give you access to 13 arts and culture venues throughout Muskegon County between 10:00am and 4:00pm - and the great thing is kids 9 and under get in FREE! As a member of the MACC Tour the ACWL-Nuveen will be providing a cool craft project – adorable keepsake boxes for Tour participants to decorate with paint, markers, felt, yarn, and whatever else you can dream up!

Our October class schedule this month is filled with creative opportunities. Next week Thursday morning, October 13th, we will be kicking off a three-part Masterstrokes painting series taught by Sarajane Fellini. Participants will learn about and paint in the style of master painters: Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gaugin, and Henri Matisse. Also, next Thursday, Mary Jo Ernst (of West Michigan Urban Sketchers), will be leading a sketch workshop at Goodrich Park from 4:00-7:00pm. If you’ve been inspired by our current exhibit, this would be a great class to attend! If you’re looking to get your middle schooler out of the house, we hope you’ll consider signing them up for our Creative Collage class on Saturday, October 29. Taught by Marv Bolthouse, students will learn how to assemble various materials to create their own expressive image. And that’s certainly not all! Be sure to scroll down or visit artswhitelake.org/upcoming-classes to see what else is on the calendar.

We look forward to seeing you at one or all of these awesome October events!
