FLOW ACUPUNCTURE'S

FALL WELLNESS GUIDE

IMMUNE SUPPORT  |  LUNG HEALTH  |  QIGONG/YOGA IN THE PARK  |  RECIPES

Autumn is the season ruled by the LUNGS in Chinese Medicine.

The LUNGS are in charge of breathing and respiration, circulation of oxygen throughout the body (also called ‘qi’) and also rules over our skin, the large intestine, the nose, and the emotion of GRIEF.

Lungs are the METAL element in Chinese medicine.

In addition, the lungs are closely related to our ‘wei qi’ or ‘defensive qi’ (our immune system) and healthy WEI QI keeps us resilient to germs, cold, and flu. Keeping our defenses up and our wei qi nourished is important during the Fall to protect our lungs from illness as we move into cold and flu season.

Some things to watch out for that are telltale signs that your Lungs need nourishing and your metal element needs balancing can include:

ACUPUNCTURE FOR

RESPIRATION

Fall is the season when our lungs are most vulnerable and this year, our lungs are UNDER ATTACK! Between the smoke and air pollution, Covid-19, and rising rates of RSV (Respiratory Virus) in Utah - our lungs need all the help they can get!

Luckily, acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been proven to help with a number of different respiratory ailments:

ACUPUNCTURE FOR CHRONIC COUGH: Research looking at 114 patients with chronic cough (worse in the morning) were treated with either acupuncture, nasal irrigation, or both. The acupuncture groups performed the best and the group getting both saw a 94.7% resolution of symptoms!

ACUPUNCTURE FOR ASTHMA: Studies show that acupuncture plus moxibustion increases the effectiveness of asthma therapies (inhalers and prescription medications) by 18.75%, with additional research supporting improved quality of life for chronic asthma sufferers.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR CHRONIC BRONCHITIS: Acupuncture research looking at chronic bronchitis in elderly patients showed a decrease in symptoms in addition to elevated immune cells in blood analysis after treatment!

What can I expect?

Qi Gong is a form of moving meditation synchronized with deep breathing. It tends to have a theme or focus, such as strengthening the organ systems, reducing pain, emotional release, etc... For this class, the general theme will be movements that help enhance one's innate immune system, otherwise known as Defensive Qi or Wei Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Sound bowl therapy has been shown to reduce feelings of tension, anxiety, stress and depression. Different sized bowls will be used for this class to produce a variety of tones to harness and enhance a deeper sense of calm throughout the practice.

Where will the class be held & is there a rain date for inclement weather?

If weather is inclement, we will meet the following Sunday, October 17th at 10am. Please check our FB and IG pages for real-time updates.

This sounds amazing. How much does it cost & how do I register?

This class is free and open to the public.

Online registration encouraged for completing consent forms prior to class.

WEI QI:

YOUR BODY'S DEFENSE SYSTEM

Did you know the Chinese discovered and understood our immune system THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO?! Since they didn't have knowledge of immune cells, bacteria, or viruses - the terminology they created to describe the process is quite interesting and almost poetic! Read more about your 'wei qi' below:

"In TCM, the external immune system is a superficial defense energy called “wei qi” (pronounced "way cheee'.)

Wei qi is like a shield that surrounds the body, located in the layers of the muscle and skin. Wei qi is nourished by the air that we breathe and the foods that we eat. Air quality and diet can directly affect our protective energy.

The circulation and activation of wei qi is controlled by the lungs. Poor lung function can lead to a poor defense against external pathogens and environmental factors such as wind, cold, heat, dampness, or dryness.

Since wei qi is controlled by the lungs which is part of the respiratory system, the nasal passage, throat, mucous membranes, and sinuses are commonly affected by an external invasion of pathogens."

Acupuncture and herbs can help strengthen your wei qi! Keep an eye out for future newsletters and social media posts for more WEI QI TIPS and click the link below to learn more!

FALL RECIPES

MALLORY'S MACA LATTE

Here’s a recipe for a warming fall beverage that can help raise our body’s yang qi, bolster the immune system, and benefit our skin. Maca is a powerful adaptogenic herb native to Peru that is rich in essential amino acids, iodine, iron, and magnesium, and can help balance hormones and improve our skin. Cinnamon assists the lungs, and brings our body’s defensive qi to the surface of the body to fight external pathogens.

Sip on a cup in the afternoon for some deep restoration to prepare for fall!

Cinnamon Maca Latte

Ingredients - makes 1-2 servings

1/2 cup full fat coconut oil

3/4 cup water or almond milk

1 rounded teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons maca powder

1 tablespoon collagen powder

1/4 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract or ½ pod crushed vanilla bean

Optional: sprinkle of cocoa powder, cinnamon stick for stirring

Instructions

1. Heat the coconut milk and water or almond milk in a small saucepan.

2. Transfer the liquid mixture to a blender that’s heat stable and add cinnamon, maca powder, collagen powder, and vanilla. Blend the mixture until frothy, and serve hot.

VANESSA'S GUIDE TO BONE BROTH

Nourishing your Body with Bone Broth this Fall

I don’t know about you, but as the weather starts to turn a bit cooler my belly starts to crave healthy, hearty soups and stews. A great base or stock is a necessity for both. I tend to gravitate to a bone broth-based stock.

So, what makes bone broth so stellar? Here are just a few of its benefits:

  • Known to be nourishing for the skin and hair, which is vital in a dry and cold climate.
  • Contains a variety of vital vitamins and minerals such as, calcium, magnesium, copper, aluminum, vitamin A, vitamin K2, zinc, iron, manganese, selenium and more!
  • Recent studies in rats have found that bone broth contributed to the healing and continued protection of the mucosal lining in the gut (woah!). Read more about it here
  • Is attributed to being an anti-inflammatory food as it contains both amino acids glycineand arginine.
  • Aids in the building and repair of connective tissue via the ingestion of amino acids proline and glycine.
  • Is a low calorie food that is high in protein and incredibly satiating.
