November, 2023

"They are prioritizing self-greed, corporate greed and short-term economic profits above people and above planet.”

~ Greta Thunberg

Our November newsletter is rolling out a bit late, but it is an important one! We have the chance to weigh in on two situations where corporations are using their power and influence to make huge profits at the expense of people and our planet. And, thanks to climate activists who have organized and our spreading the word, we can make an impact in less than 5 minutes!

ACTION 1: Demand that President Biden Stop a Dangerous Liquified Natural Gas Project

Venture Global is seeking permission to build a massive, 550 acre, $10 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Louisiana Coast. The terminal, called CP2, would ship up to 24 million tons of gas each year, mostly to foreign markets. In doing so, it would emit an amount of greenhouse gasses equal to 50 coal-fired power plants!

In coastal Louisiana and Texas, people have been working hard for years to oppose the ongoing build-out of liquefied natural gas export terminals. But they didn’t get much traction nationally until recently.

Bill McKibben, author and environmentalist, has been at the forefront of climate activism since the 1980s. He helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, which has organized protests on every continent. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL, and in promoting the fossil fuel divestment campaign. When referring to the effort to halt new licenses for LNG export, McKibben says, "I’ve never seen a national environmental campaign arise so quickly." Here is a great article he has written on the subject.

People are responding to the urgency of the situation. We can't continue to build more fossil fuel facilities and infrastructure and meet essential climate targets. Citizen input will be critical in stopping this project and others.

ACTION 2: Oppose holding the hearing on Vogtle cost overruns till after the Public Service Commission Elections

Construction of the Vogtle nuclear power plant is almost completed. The decision for who will pay for the cost overruns for Units 3 and 4 is about to be made by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). While there is debate among climate activists as to whether the plant should have been constructed, and whether nuclear should be part of clean energy sourcing, there is an overwhelming consensus that Georgia Power should pay all/most of the significant cost overruns. Georgia Power is asking the Georgia PSC to pass the $7.65 billion bill on to consumers.

Nuclear Watch South and Georgia WAND paid for a full page ad in the AJC this week (see above) to publish an open letter to request delaying hearings on the Vogtle cost overruns.

From the open letter:

"Delaying the final cost review for Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 is justified, reasonable, and prudent under the unprecedented circumstances of two un-elected commissioners occupying PSC seats after their terms have expired."

"We strongly encourage you to postpone the Vogtle cost overruns hearings until after the PSC elections. Who pays for Vogtle cost overruns is the biggest financial decision in Georgia history. It should not be undermined by these improprieties."
