Venture Global is seeking permission to build a massive, 550 acre, $10 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the Louisiana Coast. The terminal, called CP2, would ship up to 24 million tons of gas each year, mostly to foreign markets. In doing so, it would emit an amount of greenhouse gasses equal to 50 coal-fired power plants!
In coastal Louisiana and Texas, people have been working hard for years to oppose the ongoing build-out of liquefied natural gas export terminals. But they didn’t get much traction nationally until recently.
Bill McKibben, author and environmentalist, has been at the forefront of climate activism since the 1980s. He helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, which has organized protests on every continent. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL, and in promoting the fossil fuel divestment campaign. When referring to the effort to halt new licenses for LNG export, McKibben says, "I’ve never seen a national environmental campaign arise so quickly." Here is a great article he has written on the subject.
People are responding to the urgency of the situation. We can't continue to build more fossil fuel facilities and infrastructure and meet essential climate targets. Citizen input will be critical in stopping this project and others.
