We've had a big clear out of the garden area next to Maple. It was so overgrown and thick with bramble and other untended plants that we decided to empty it completely.
So, faced with a blank space we thought over what we'd like to put here. Down the long side we're going to create a relaxing seating area. We've planted two Japanese Maple trees, so that the lovely red leaves contrast against the wall and the fence, and we'll put in two benches. The lamp post, previously hidden amongst all the vegetation, now has pride of place.
In the bigger area in front of the cottage, we've decided to plant a kitchen garden of herbs such as sage, thyme, mint, parsley, basil, and so on. It will smell wonderful, and as an added bonus, if guests would like fresh herbs for their cooking, they can help themselves!
