welcome

I said, brrr! Us Melbournians would be in self-imposed quarantine due to the cold anyway, but luckily, our government organised it for us. It's okay, cos I found a new hobby - no, not baking, exercising or learning, YAWN - I've started shopping from bed. FABULOUS. I just scroll, add to cart, then off to dreamland to act surprised the next day when Will is like 'How many f*cking packages do you get a day?' Half of it is cos I feel I need stuff, like a globe-shaped bar cart. The other is so the postie visits - finally, SOMEONE TO TALK TO. I did my hair and everything.

In other news, lately, I've been trying to up my reality tv game. Whilst I just couldn't commit to Bachie in Paradise (I'm sorry, it just tinges over to far too awful for me), I'm all about our latest Aus Bach, so make sure you're onto our Bachie recaps here, where got our hands on Locky's letters home from the Kuta villa. We also run Bach threads on the LAL FB group - not gonna lie, your comments are the reason I watch. Also got slightly obsessed with RuPaul - may have smashed two seasons in a few days, I loved myself sick for it. I regret nothing. Cos if you can't love yourself, how the hell you gonna love someone else?

There is one thing that has upset me a lot over the past month, and that is the media's wannabe takedown of Ellen DeGeneres. Agree or not, cancel culture is not something I'm here for at all, and here's why:

Why We Love Ellen And Hate Cancel Culture

The internet wants her cancelled, and I am not here for it #istandwithellen

In other news, thank goodness for LAL, can I get an amen right up in here? It's given me something to do (after RuPaul obvs), and hopefully given you something to scroll/listen to in the background (thanks Mum!) We've loved the submissions, don't be shy, absolutely love hearing from you all!

This month, we talk new shows to get into over winter, fun fashion montages, and all get jealous of this month's career profile from someone who works in TV. Sidenote - they are not allowed to be on Jobkeeper. I think we can all agree that like supermarket and hospital staff, tv makers are ESSENTIAL SERVICES.

Let's go!

Top 10 Shows of 2020: So Far

My new 'To Do' list to make me feel accomplished now consists of watching all the shows I've wanted to watch for ages, find new shows, watch those, then recommended shows, watch those - basically, I'm flat. OUT. Note: don't confuse this with my other post, Best Shows of 2019. This is new (I told you, I watch a lot of tv...)

Got a problem that needs solving? Miss. Maple from HR is here to save the day.

Help me, Miss. Maple!

Dear Miss. Maple,

I feel like in quarantine I haven't achieved too much. I'm either trying to relax or trying to get shit done and so then I achieve neither and just end up scrolling my phone. Any tips on how to get motivated like you always seem to be in your Insta action shots?

Thanks,

Constant Scroller

Dear Constant Scroller,

Maple understands. Sometimes, I want to go for a walk, but, I also want to sleep, so I kind of dance around the house a bit until the humans realise they both need to walk me AND THEN provide the entire couch for me to sleep on. My point is this: you can't do it all at once. If you're in a constant state of in-between, you'll never get anything done. Allocate both 'productive' and 'relax' time into your day - actually scheduling in time to do nothing can be freeing knowing you're giving yourself permission to scroll pics of me online (note: always permitted). As for the work time, do your best, but you know - give yourself a break. It's cold, it's COVID, and if scrolling makes you happy, just like chewing all of the human's remote controls makes me happy - well, YOLO.

Signed,

Miss. Maple

Gosh red carpets are bleak SLASH non-existent. I've seen people trying to merge masks on red carpets and weddings. I'm not ready. It's just too sad. But, that doesn't mean our recaps have to be! Whilst in real life trying on outfit after outfit sounds fun but is actually kind of exhausting (these days it's particularly uninspiring - like, do I wear the tracksuit pants with holes in them, or the ones that shrunk in the wash?) judging fashions in movies is so much fun! So let's talk:

Best Fashion Montages on Film

Is there anything better in a movie than a full blown fashion montage?

I see what you did there...

what the f*ck does a ... actually do?

Each month, let's investigate a career we might know the title of, but have zero idea how they fill their 9-5. This month, let's find out - what the f*ck does a 'TV Post Production Producer' do?

With Elle Sassenrath, California, USA

Who are you and what do you do?

I make television! Really though, once the cameras are done for the day on set, I coordinate transferring the footage to the editorial department, or 'Post' (Post-production) and supervise every aspect from how the final edit looks; colour correction; visual effects; sound and music; to delivering the show to the network for air, so better hit those air dates! (Sometimes with only days to spare!) Some shows I have worked on are The Mindy Project, Cougartown, Gotham, Pennyworth, and Doom Patrol.

You are so cool. Tell us about a day in the life...

I am managing a few episodes at a time, so I'll check in on the status of each. In television, we film episodes back to back, one episode at a time, so as more eps are filmed, more projects are happening on the Post side. I have three teams of editors, as well as a supervisor, coordinator and office assistant (and sometimes an internal VFX department). So, not only are all episodes in different phases, but it is up to me to manage those processes and make sure everyone is driving the episodes towards delivery. I work for the studio, and send them updates as we go, explaining any setbacks with a proposal of how to move forward. I also handle budget management and cost reporting, which are big aspects of producing (and help in getting asked back to work on a show!)

Do you like it? What’s good and bad about it?

It's a balancing act, you need to protect the artistic intent of the show's creators, while also protecting the studio's money. Since Post is the finishing process, and so many decisions are made there, we have more pressure on us than the other departments. "We'll fix it in Post!" is a common line around the set, if they don't have time to film correctly, they move on and will ask us to make it work...and somehow we always do! Though, not usually in the ways anyone imagined. (because imagination rarely translates to reality...hence why people dislike movie adaptations of books they love!) Post is great if you love puzzles. You have all the pieces given to you, and guidelines, then you get to assemble it and make it your vision! I love being able to influence the colour and sound of a show, we spend time on the smallest elements to evoke the emotions WE want you to feel!

What kind of person should do it?

Someone who can handle the meticulous and repetitive- I must watch each episode at least 20 times before it is delivered!

how we first met

Featuring stories around the world of how a love story began - romances, friendships, and everything in between.

With Steph and Cicca

Cicca had just moved back from Benalla, ready for the 'Summer of Cicca! (Note from Steph: 'He still blames me for ruining the Summer of Cicca and doesn't know how he got stuck in this relationship!') Meanwhile, Steph decided last minute to go out with the gals. A friend arranged to meet up with some guy mates. She spotted Cicca and thought he looked fun, so decided to dance around him so he would notice her. He did - he bought her a drink and they hung out all night. The next day (after meeting her mum on the first day!), Steph gave him her number but didn't expect much, but he messaged to go on a date that week. When they met up again, it was like they had known each other forever. Two weeks later, he asked Steph to be his girlfriend and they have been inseparable ever since - they are engaged and waiting for the shitshow that is the 'rona to end so they can bring the house down at their wedding!

jewish finance chat

A while back in the FB group and the podcast, we asked you guys 'What is definitely worth the money?' From bedsheets to cordless vaccuums and soy candles, whilst normally I'm all about that coupon life, here is where to shell out those government-saved dollar$...

What is definitely worth the money?

Not to be confused with saving money, cos being Jewish and saving go together like cheese and our lactose intolerance.

ranting and raving

This month, I'm annoyed with: Myself for not planning accordingly. I always know I want chocolate late at night, but come curfew, I have nothing cos of lame Daylight "I'm trying to be healthy" Jess. She stinks. Plan, Day Jess!
Loving: Putting flowers next to my bed to smell before sleeping. So calming and lovely.
Hating: This cold. So uninspiring for us in lockdown to go on our pointless strolls.

quote of the month
