Kom Annual Report

After the KRRA AGM earlier this winter, here is the Chair's Annual Report:

About this time last year, uncertain of where Covid and other global challenges were sweeping us all towards, our residents’ association inspired by the Scarborough experience, decided to explore a new flattened out operational model that would combine specific interests and skills with a wider range of community and village building activities. We explored the possibilities in a facilitated, workshop style AGM with a good turn-out of residents many of whom joined and stayed with one or more of the several focus groups that emerged.

I’m happy to report that so far this has worked well and that for the rest of 2021 and these first months of 2022 there has been a constant hum of activity and a growth of leadership, accountability, innovation, sustained work and co-operation across several fronts. Here follows a summary of the main activities.

Fynbos Boost for Kom

The KRRA environmental team have been busy around Kommetjie. A good start has been made in the restoration of land between Wireless Road and the south-western bank of the Bokkramspruit River that exits into the ocean at Long Beach.

Five sections have been cleared and planted with Strandveld species from Fynboslife Nursery in Muizenberg. These 'circles' will be added to and extended as funds permit. Eugenie Skelton has transformed the road reserve on the eastern side of the circle, also with Strandveld plants from FynbosLife.

Alien clearing of Port Jackson, Rooikrans, purple Echium, Glebionis coronaria (the yellow daisy) and pink mallow at the Kom continues.

The pavement along the entrance to Fisherman's Garden bar and restaurant has also had a facelift when local garden services company Elements installed a colourful, mixed rockery garden, while the Eco Nursery School planted the north side of the traffic circle.

Sign of the Times

The #Love30km campaign, which calls for a maximum speed in the village of 30km/h, is gathering momentum with another Surfboard Sign put up near Kommetjie Primary school calling on motorists to drive carefully and safely.

This follows the peaceful protest in June to call for a pavement on the road between Ocean View and Kommetjie, which was attended by children, cyclists, skateboarders and civic groups from Ocean View, Kommetjie and the surrounds.

Road safety activist and Kommetjie resident Caro Smit, head of the Road Safety arm of Kommetjie Residents and Ratepayers Association (KRRA) and founder and director of South Africans Against Drunk Driving (Sadd), organised the protest held along the road between Ocean View and the Kom. Sadd works with similar road-safety organisations around the world to reduce road deaths and injuries.

Social Fabric

We were over the moon when our group was joined by five new members after the KRRA AGM in May, bringing new skills and interests to the existing mixture. These new members have attended one of our fortnightly meetings where we got to know one another better. The Social Fabric group will work on several goals.
