This is our very first quarterly newsletter to fill you in on our news so far in 2023.
Welcome to PsyDrive’s first newsletter! PsyDrive was set up by Dr Lisa Dorn to deliver training, consultancy and evidence-based interventions for improved road user behaviour. Our newsletters will keep you up to date with our work to improve road safety education.
Human Factors and Road Risk Management CPD course
Drivers working for the emergency services are expected to drive with the highest level of awareness and skill in every situation. The ability to understand the human factor impact on blue light driving performance is important for training students. We were therefore delighted to deliver the two-day online Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) accredited course for a group of police driving instructors from across the country. They passed the course assessment with a gold star and promptly received their CIEHF certificate.
PsyDrive also delivered their CIEHF accredited course to National Highways team leaders. Improving human factors knowledge and skills helped National Highways in designing campaigns to ensure everyone who uses the strategic road network get home safe and well.
The human factors course has run several times since with delegates from across the world. Despite the time difference, we even delivered a bespoke course in New Zealand for a group of driving instructors.
Currently there are places on our human factors course for June 21st and 22nd and September 13th and 14th 2023.
If you would like to increase your human factors knowledge and skills, book a place here.
Podcasts, Conferences and Master Classes
Lisa took part in the Driving for Better Business (DfBB) podcast for those who manage drivers and vehicles and want to reduce road risk within their organisation. Lisa talked about driver stress and the health implications highlighting some on the key risks that fleet managers need to be aware of.
Lisa will also deliver a master class by Zoom for the Association for Road Risk Management (Formerly AIRSO) on the link between stress and driver distraction.
Lisa has been invited to speak at the United Nations Refugee Agency's Road Safety conference in support of the UN Decade of Actions on Road Safety on 22-23rd May. Her talk will be on the human element of road safety and the risk factors focusing on speed, distraction and physical impairment.
PsyDrive partners with Driving for Better Business
Driving for Better Business (DfBB) is a government-backed National Highways programme to help employers to reduce work-related road risk. PsyDrive was accepted as a partner for DfBB in April and National Highways lead for DfBB Anne-Marie Penny said "I'm delighted to welcome Lisa Dorn and PsyDrive as a partner. In improving safety on our roads changing driver behaviour has always been the greatest challenge. The partnership with PsyDrive provides a brilliant opportunity to better understand how we can reinforce safe driving behaviours helping everyone to get home safe and well."
We’ve launched a new blog page!
Our first blog covers some of the research on mood and driver behaviour and what can be done to manage the risk.
"Anger can lead fleet drivers to process driving-related information in an automatic mode and this can lead drivers to miss relevant hazards, whereas sadness can generate mind wandering. Both these effects of mood can impact on fleet safety."
Fleet safety intervention toolkit
Aid and development organisations often operate in difficult and sometimes dangerous situations in developing countries. Fleet Forum commissioned PsyDrive to investigate what can be done to improve fleet safety in these challenging environments. We undertook a literature review to identify the latest evidence, conducted focus groups and interviews with dozens of humanitarian aid fleet safety leaders and developed a fleet safety toolkit. You can see some of the results of the research here.
