Harmony Farm Sanctuary Rescue + Rehabilitate + Advocate SEPTEMBER Newsletter |
Welcome to our monthly newsletter. We appreciate you taking the time to read this. We will share pictures, videos and stories of our rescued farm animals and provide an update on what's happening at the sanctuary. Most months we focus on a specific farmed animal. Last month it was goats and this month it will be pigs! We currently have 18 pigs at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. Their names are Eleanor, Clover, Rusty, Poppy, Hamilton, Peaches, Petunia, Doris, PeeWee, Zoey, Lucy, Pig Floyd, Wilbur, Francis, Sherman, Polly, Jericho and Elise. Our pigs have the freedom to roam, form friendships with other pigs, play, roll in mud pits and pools and receive treats and belly rubs. They are just pigs without having to do anything for anyone but themselves. |

A Day in the Life of our Rescued Pigs! |
PIGS ARE AMAZING! Pigs learn their name by 2-3 weeks old. Pigs rank #4 in intelligence. Pigs enjoy listening to music. Pigs communicate with over 20 unique vocalizations. Pigs have a cognitive ability similar to a 3 year old child. Pigs are clean animals. If given enough space they will never go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep. A Pig's lifespan is 15 to 20 years. Similar to dogs, the smaller the breed the longer they live. Pigs feel pain and love. They are emotional and sensitive animals. |

This is Poppy! Poppy, along with Rusty, were rescued from a hoarding situation outside of Portland, OR. They were amongst hundreds of pigs living in a deplorable situation. Confined inside a house without access to proper food or even water, they would not have survived much longer. Fortunately many rescue groups intervened, saved and rehomed ALL the pigs to sanctuaries across the United States. We were one of those sanctuaries, giving safe haven and a forever home to Poppy and Rusty. Poppy lives with her big brother Rusty and big sisters Eleanor and Clover. She spends her days rolling in the mud, playing with toys and looking for treats from the volunteers. Her siblings always make sure she gets a nice place to nap during the day and a cozy place to sleep at night. You are safe Poppy! And will always have water, food, treats and love the rest of your life. We love you, Poppy! |

This is Wilbur! Wilbur came to us in 2018. He was purchased as a family pet. Things started out okay for Wilbur but soon the young son responsible for his well being became less interested in Wilbur and started to provide less and less care for him. Eventually he was moved outside without adequate housing or care. His diet consisted of "whatever was around" the house. This lead to Wilbur becoming very overweight, very unhealthy and very unhappy. Some in the family thought it was time to end his life and become dinner while a compassionate sole decided that he needed a nice, caring forever home. Luckily that compassionate sole won out. She reached out to Harmony Farm Sanctuary and secured Wilbur his forever home. Volunteers, Kelly and Jeff rescued Wilbur and brought him home to HFS in 2018. Once he arrived he was put on a special diet to help him shed some pounds and get his digestive system healthy again. Although his rough start in life left him with sight problems, he gets around the courtyard just fine. He can be seen on most days basking in the sun or nearby pool. He loves naptime and always lets you know when its time for his next meal. His presence is felt and his cute scrunchy face always beckons a scratch. He is beloved by all the animals and the volunteers at HFS. It just really wouldn't be the same without him! We love you, Wilbur to the moon and back! | | |

The Sad Reality of Factory Farmed Pigs Around 97% of the 100 million pigs farmed in the United States are reared inside factory farms. They suffer a very cruel existence from birth till death. Factory farmed pigs spend their entire life in confinement, in barren, concrete pens. These highly intelligent, charismatic and social animals can be as playful as a dog and as intelligent as a 3 year old. Due to chronic stress and boredom pigs develop abnormal behaviors out of sheer frustration. They develop skin lesions, painful lameness, digestive problems and lung disease. Baby piglets have their tails cut off and their teeth pulled (both without anesthesia) solely because of their natural tendency to chew! Mother pigs confined in gestation crates have no room to turn around or lie down comfortably. They will experience severe physical pain and psychological distress all their lives. They will stand and sleep on concrete floors, whether they are in gestation crates or in pens. When just a few months old, pigs are transported to the slaughterhouse, often over long distances and in all weathers. In the slaughterhouse they will be stunned, gassed, boiled and hung. Please help put an end to this cruelty by going plant-based. This is why we RESCUED & ADVOCATE on their behalf. Please consider helping our efforts by becoming a Patreon Member for as little as $5.00/mo. |

HAY PRICES ARE SKYROCKETING! WE NEED HELP! |
Hay is the most essential element of our animal care program. It is also our biggest expense. As we aim to restock we are hit with the reality that hay prices have more than doubled. This is due to the extreme drought, increased fuel prices, lack of water resources and now, fewer growers. Please help our efforts by making a donation to our hay fund below. |

Animal Welfare Organizations That Inspire Us! |

Animal Save Movement's mission is to spread the idea that we all have a moral duty to bear witness, end animal agriculture and reforest the Earth. The Animal Save movement started in Dec. 2010 with the inception of Toronto Pig Save. While walking her dog, founder Anita Krajnc witnessed sad and frightened pigs on their way to a nearby slaughterhouse in downtown Toronto. She couldn't look away and made a promise to herself and to the pigs to hold a minimum of 3 animal vigils each week to bear witness. Her long term goal was to inspire others to hold an animal vigil at every slaughterhouse around the world. Animals Save is now a global network of activists bearing witness to animals at the gates of the slaughterhouses worldwide.
