Everyone Deserves a Seat at the Table! At Fight Like A Warrior, we are passionate about bringing the patient voice together with the perspectives of caregivers, medical professionals, and advocates. Everyone deserves a seat at the table, especially during important conversations about the future of healthcare! Meet Breana Richardson, a 3rd year physical therapy student at Alabama State University and the creator of the Physical Therapists of Color Instagram page: “As a student, one of my passions has been highlighting and increasing BIPOC representation in physical therapy. Our numbers in the profession as underrepresented minorities do not match the numbers of the general population. This is unfortunate because research has shown that patient outcomes are much better when they have a health provider who looks like them that they feel they can trust more. Before starting school in 2018, I was eager to start connecting with more students and clinicians who looked like me. After searching all of Instagram, I could find pages for BIPOC physicians, dentists, and nurses - but none for PTs! So the idea just popped into my head late that night that I could be the one to start such a page. I started Physical Therapists of Color just a few weeks before starting my first semester of PT school, and as of today is has grown into a community of over 5,000 BIPOC clinicians, students, and prospective students.” |

April is Autism Acceptance Month! April is #AutismAcceptanceMonth and today we have Landon’s mom, Brook (@thehappyspectrum), sharing about their family’s journey: “Landon was diagnosed with Autism just days after his second birthday. People thought we were crazy for getting him evaluated because he was ‘just being a toddler.’ We knew something was different about him. We just didn't know exactly what it was. The diagnosis surprised us, but helped us know how to parent, communicate, and connect with him in a way he needed. I hear all the time how parents are told all the things their child won't be able to do in life because of that diagnosis. We were blessed and were told right from the get go that Landon had endless potential! We know Autism will create some challenges for him in the future, but we also know that he will surprise us! How thankful I am for those professionals giving us this mindset from the beginning! Landon has proven that in every way! He is about to turn 4 and has already surprised us in more ways than we can count. Every time I get nervous about something being hard for him, he exceeds my expectations and makes friends along the way! If given the choice, we wouldn't trade Landon's Autism diagnosis for the world. It comes with challenges, of course, but the blessings it brings to our family far outweigh the negative! Landon teaches us how to see the world from a different point of view. He helps us to slow down and appreciate the small things. I wish everyone could have a Landon in their family!” |
