JUNE NEWSLETTER

Summer certainly seems to have arrived this week, just in time for sitting in hot stuffy classrooms again!

I've been busy on Twitter this week and have learnt a lot - thank you Twitterers! Did you know that a cylinder isn't actually a prism because a prism can only have polygonal faces? Read more here! I also had an excellent discussion about teaching sine and cosine rules here which led to the lesson below being created.

I've continued to update lessons on the site by topic too - this month I have worked on Data Handling, Construction & Loci and Calculations and Accuracy. I'm finding this great to refresh my subject knowledge before I go back to work in September.

I have corrected a few broken links on the year 11 SOL too. Clearly I need to stop changing page names on the website!

I'm continuing to work on my ongoing project as well. This is still on track for release before September. I have finished the foundation part and am currently about a third of the way through the higher part. It's a big job but I'm enjoying having something to work on again.

As well as…

Sine and Cosine Rules

This followed one of the Twitter conversations mentioned above. Pretty pleased with the opportunities for students to really think in this extended lesson.

Website of the Month: NRICH

NRICH’s activities focus on developing problem solving. Their rich mathematical tasks aim to build students’ perseverance, mathematical reasoning, ability to apply knowledge creatively in unfamiliar contexts, and confidence in tackling new challenges.

‘Low threshold high ceiling’ resources are designed to be accessible to all learners, encouraging exploration and discussion. ‘Live’ problems offer opportunities for students to share their solutions for publication on the site.

Lots of these activities are great for introducing topics or extending prior learning and making your students think. It's important to emphasise the importance of not giving up, and these problems really do have something for everyone.
