Women's Health Week - 12-18 August

Did you know this is the first year in New Zealand there has been a women's health week?

Many women put themselves last, prioritizing care for everyone else around them. This is a reminder for all wāhine to do one thing this month for themselves, to improve their health and wellbeing. Are you up to date with your cervical screening? breast screening? vaccinations? perhaps you need a day off at the spa?

Here are some amazing resources, short reads and videos to inspire you.

The New Zealand health system

There has been a lot of recent negative press about the state of healthcare in New Zealand and the sustainability of GP practices.

I want to reassure our community that at Akaroa Health we are working hard to ensure our model is sustainable and affordable and continues to meet the local needs.

We are still taking on new patients when many practices (69%) in Christchurch are not, and we can usually see a patient within 1-2 days compared to Christchurch wait times of 2-3 weeks.

Fee increase

Due to less funding from the Government across the Health Sector all GP’s will be increasing their fees.

Although entitled to increase our fees to $65 for an Adult GP consult we have elected to raise our fees by a minimal rate to $52 from the 1st of September.

Maintaining affordability for our community remains a key focus. We are completing a review of all of our other service fees and there will be some increases to cover costs.

We encourage everyone to consider enrolling with Akaroa Health to access the enrolled patient rates which are significantly cheaper than the non-enrolled / casual rates.

Open hours

A reminder that although staff are on site 24/7 - we are open to the public from 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm. The main door will be locked from 12pm - 2pm for security.

We use the time between to complete script requests, referrals, phone calls to patients or specialist and staff meetings or training.

  • If visiting our residents please come between 10am-12pm or 2pm-4pm and enter via the Onuku Road entrance.

  • If visiting an inpatient please call ahead, particularly if the patient is in for palliative care, so we can confirm if the patient is accepting visitors.

  • Visiting restrictions do not apply to immediate family visiting a palliative patient.
