Article Found Beneath Dibble Library Floorboards During Renovation SRSM Spring 2023 Intern, Martin Cota, has been testing his research skills. During the renovation of the North Gallery in the historic Dibble Library, a fragile flap of newspaper was recovered from beneath the floorboards. With no date and half the title missing, Martin had to use context clues from within the article to determine when the article was published. The newspaper cites one Francis P. Garvan, former "Alien Property Custodian.” |
Garvan, also president of the Chemical Foundation Inc., dealt with German patents related to the production of synthetic, organic chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, seized during WWI. At the time of the article, Garvan had recently appeared before the Reciprocal Trade Agreement Committee to argue against "hampering the development of the American chemical industry by bartering its products in reciprocal trade agreements with other nations." |
Garvan references President Roosevelt, stating "activities vital to national defense must be sustained... and cannot be sacrificed for passing advantage." Using these clues, Martin dated the article between WWI and WWII, potentially after or during the German invasion of France (May 10, 1940 – June 25, 1940).
