CAN YOU WALK THROUGH PAPER?

Professor Fang Shu

Folks, can you walk through a piece of paper? Please allow me to share with you how I make it happen.

At the beginning of every semester, I always brought scissors and some recycled paper with me to class. "Is it possible to cut a hole large enough in a regular piece of paper, in which I can physically walk through?" This walk-through-paper trick is one of my favorite ways to engage students in creative activities.

Not surprisingly, most students think it is impossible to walk through the paper. When students finally see me walking through the hole I cut, they are shocked. So, how did I cut the hole?

The edges of the sheet of paper are our insurmountable limit. The logical mystery then is how we can expand those edges to be a lot wider spread than they are. Think outside the box! I provided students a solution to demonstrate that nothing is impossible.

I do my best to be a creative professor. I feel it is my responsibility to structure a dynamic environment in which students have the opportunity to learn. Instead of lecturing, I teach by conducting activities, brainstorming sessions, role-playings, group projects, and games to help students understand the business transactions in my accounting classes. It takes time and effort to think outside the box and be creative is not easy. However, it is worthwhile when students tell me how much they enjoy my classes!

Keep it in mind my friends, always think outside the box!
