Igniting STEM Dreams: New $2.5 Million Grant Empowers Undergrad Entrepreneurs of Color

A $2.5 million grant ignites a five-year mission to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of Black and other underrepresented undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Professor Ebony McGee of the Johns Hopkins School of Education, Associate Professor De’Etra Young of Tennessee State University, and Associate Professor Susanne L. Toney of Hampton University will lead a team of experts from historically Black colleges and universities and Johns Hopkins to tackle disparities head-on.

This study aims to bridge the racial gap by creating a dedicated STEM entrepreneurship program for historically underserved students. The first year focuses on understanding motivations and experiences through a comprehensive survey. Subsequent stages involve focus groups with successful entrepreneurs and developing tailored programs to address barriers like college debt, limited access to education, and lack of capital.

The program aims to challenge systemic racism and promote financial prosperity through STEM innovation by fostering a new generation of diverse business owners. McGee sees undergrads as an “untapped market.” This project holds immense potential to ignite creativity, equip them for success, and reshape the STEM landscape for a more inclusive and representative future.

Afrofuturism Unveiled: Illuminating the Path to Cultural Resurgence and STEM Excellence

By Devin T. White and Ebony O. McGee

Afrofuturism, a vibrant movement weaving Black history, culture, and imagination, reclaims erased Black voices in STEM and challenges Eurocentric narratives. Inspired by ancient Kemet’s Ma’at principles, it envisions a future of justice and harmony. Delving into the past to heal slavery’s wounds, Afrofuturist STEAM fuses art with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, empowering Black students as future leaders. It strives for collective liberation, dismantling systemic racism and diversifying STEM while welcoming Latinofuturism and Indigenous futurism to co-create an equitable, inclusive world. Stay tuned for more about this movement in an upcoming article in Science for the People.
