News and information for February 2023

NO CHILD SHALL BE DENIED AN EDUCATION, NOT EVEN WHEN HE OR SHE IS A REFUGEE. P4T PROVIDES QUALITY EDUCATION TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY.

Dear P4T supporters!

We are excited to share with you our monthly newsletter for February 2023, which shows how our programs have impacted the lives of hundreds of refugees and the host community. P4T focuses on four thematic areas of Education, Health, Livelihood and Community Service and Protection.

Meet our newly elected Chairperson of the P4T Board

P4T is no longer a local club started in 2007 but we are now a globally recognised entity.

The P4T Norway and P4T Uganda teams held elections for the Board leadership. Today, we are extremely happy to present to you the P4T Board Chairperson.

We are privileged to have such a committed and talented person as the leader of our organization, and we believe the diverse experience our new board members bring will add significant value to the organisation.

Please join us in welcoming and congratulating Bridget.

Vocational Skills Training (VST); A New Innovation to supplement cash rations to promote self-reliance among Refugees in Uganda.

Monthly, refugees receive cash rations ($4) from World Food Program/UNHCR, which is clearly very little to support feeding of an individual considering the economic hardship and rising prices of commodities.

In order to address this, P4T with funding from Arnhold de la Camara Foundation and The Altenburg Foundation is implementing an innovative approach to ensure refugees have a variety of income sources.

This has been achieved through the introduction of Vocational Skills Trainings, an approach that allows refugees and Ugandans to expand their economic opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

P4T trains the most vulnerable but passionate youth and women in marketable vocational skills in tailoring, carpentry, and handcraft life skills. They are also trained in entrepreneurship, business management, bookkeeping and marketing.

P4T Refugee Education Program to provide quality education to refugees in Uganda to build a sustainable young generation with knowledge and skills

In the education thematic area, P4T runs ECD, Primary and Secondary Schools in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. The school year began on 16th February 2023 and by the end of the month, P4T Nursery and Primary school had an enrollment of 650 children.

The management of P4T greatly appreciates The Altenburg Foundation for supporting the P4T Nursery and Primary school teachers’ salaries for the whole year 2023. We now have stable teachers providing education to the refugee and Ugandan children without worrying about their salaries.

P4T Nursery and Primary school compound has bright lights at night. This is really important to us and our pupils. Anything can go wrong in the dark. With teenage boys and girls in P7 attending night classes in a partially enclosed school, the school administrators must have a good sight of the environment.

Aid Pioneers e.V. believed their safety was paramount and last year they financed the installation of 2 Compound lights and a 1000W solar Backup system for the Fountain of Life Foundation - FOL established Computer Lab. You cannot believe how much these solar systems have helped: the school environment is bright at any time, no more interrupted classes in the computer lab, and no more excuses among P4T management staff like, "my laptop is off". Productivity is in the skies.

Thank you Christiane from The Altenburg Foundation, the Aid Pioneers e.V. team, Johnam Kambasu from P4T, and the entire team at P4T and P4T Nursery and Primary School.

A drainable 8 stance latrine is under construction at P4T Nursery and Primary school to help us meet the ministry of education standard of latrine stance ratio of 72:1. We thank The Altenburg Foundation for this generous gift to our children and to ensuring that the school meets the required standards.

Meet Dusabe Aline who lost hope to join secondary school

Aline is a 14 year old girl who excelled in the 2022 National Primary Leaving Examinations with 10 Aggregates and completed her primary school from the camp.

She beat the best child at P4T who scored 11 Aggregates. Her colleagues started secondary school now 3 weeks in but she has been home hopeless about joining secondary school because she has no money for school fees.

Recently, she came with her parents to P4T to ask for a sponsorship. Aline together with her mother are extremely happy for the scholarship provided to her at P4T Secondary School.

Aline is among hundreds of refugee girls and boys who have failed to join secondary school. “Aline was worried to stay out of school as one of her friend got married last week”, said Aline mother.

We call upon donors and well wishes to support P4T secondary school so that it can accommodate hundreds of these kinds of children to continue with their studies.

Great thanks go to our partners in Education;

The Altenburg Foundation, Aid Pioneer, Zam Zam Foundation, Windle International, Mission of Hope 2021 Volunteers (Dr. Tayseer, Dr. Paul, Dr. Suhail, Dr. Brad, Dr. Susana, Dr. Alex, Anjum, Fathima and Imran) and Office of the Prime Minister (OPM Uganda) who are working hard to support refugees have access to quality education.

International Volunteers hosted by P4T

Planning for Tomorrow (P4T) has hosted MISSION OF HOPE 2023, an annual short term medical mission that contributes to increased welfare of refugees and Kyangwali Refugee Settlement host communities with different components of social services including but not limited to Health, Livelihoods and Education.

P4T has both short term and long term volunteer opportunities in Uganda where we host International Volunteers for both Medical and Humanitarian missions. The medical missions provide lifesaving treatment and medication, provide direct patient care and surgery, and train health workers including midwives and Doctors at local hospitals in Uganda.

We are grateful for the continued generosity, support and efforts from volunteers and supporters like you, Dr Tayseer, Dr Susan, Dr. Mohammed, Dr. Ahmad, Mr. Nathan, Mrs. Fathima, Dr. Suhail, Mr. Imran, Ms. Anjum, Dr.Greg, Dr.Susana, Dr.Alex, Dr.Paul, Mr. Omar, Mr. Fahim, Mr. Azziz, Dr. Zuhair, and Mr. Saif. You have all greatly contributed to our efforts to give more and more people a better quality life through education, livelihood, health and community service.

This year, the Medical Mission took place from 5th to12th February 2023 at 4 locations: Kyangwali Health Centre IV, Maratatu Health Centre III, Rwenyawawa Health Centre III, P4T Ground, and Youth Centre. The mission was a great success as it benefitted more than 400 people in the Surgical Camp, Eye Clinic, WASH and Portable Ultrasound Trainings.

It engaged 39 staff and volunteers from P4T and MTI. The flow of logistics was smooth with good services of the van (Mr. Justus), the hotel in Kampala (Forest Cottages Bukoto), and Guest House in Kyangwali (St. Patrick team). There was no safeguarding issue recorded but 2 disorders were experienced: Meals for lunch were delivered late in most of the mission days and the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria inflicted pain to the Mission Team Leader and the entire team.

We celebrate these achievements from the mission with our partners Medical Teams International (the UNHCR health implementing partner in Uganda), Kikuube District Local Government, UNHCR and Office of the Prime Minister in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.

Butterfly Ultrasound technology saving hundreds of lives in refugee hospitals of Kyangwali

Dr Susan trained local midwives and nurses in Butterfly ultrasound technology with the practical skills to provide high-quality results on emergency obstetric and neonatal care. Training midwives will help to reduce on referrals to Hoima Referral hospital in Hoima town, which is 100KM away from Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.

The midwives have had no imaging capabilities but now midwives feel empowered with Butterfly Ultrasound technology. They were excited to use the technology for the first time as these hospitals don’t have full time sonographers.

Dr Suzan worked in three health centers of Rwenyawawa Health Center III, Maratatu Health Center III and Kyagwali Health Center IV. These hospitals were equipped with Butterfly ultrasound technology.

“Before we’ve been using traditional methods, which are not accurate on women while giving birth and other women with complications, we would refer them to Kyangwali Health Center IV or Hoima Referral Hospital and due to long distance some women die on the way or immediately after reaching the referral hospital. With this technology in our facilities, we can save thousands of women together with their kids”, Said local Midwives from Health Center III.

Mohammed, Optometrist provided free eye screening services and free glasses during Eye Clinic in Uganda

Dr. Mohammed is an Optometrist who came from Egypt. The eye clinic was carried out at P4T School and UNHCR/Government aided Hospitals mainly Kyangwali Health Centre IV and Maratatu Health Centre III implemented by P4T in partnership with MTI who oversee these hospitals.

The eye clinic assessed over 260 patients out of over 500 who needed services and 200 people were given free eye glasses. We thank Dr. Mohammed who worked over time without having breaks every day.

Visual impairment is a significant health problem in Uganda especially in refugee camps where they lack facilities and resources needed to treat eye problems. Blindness is preventable and treatable but hundreds of people in Kyangwali refugee settlement and host community remain at risk of visual loss due to the lack of eye-care services. We thank the International Volunteers coordinator Dr, Tayseer for making this Mission of Hope II happen.

Clean water brings life, and hope, to refugees in Uganda.

In Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, poor water quality and lack of water in refugee camp has created a "crisis within the crisis", causing outbreaks of water-borne diseases, such as cholera, typhoid, malaria, and hepatitis.

With support from International Volunteers in 2021, we constructed 6 water wells that are impacting lives of over 10,000 people. We’re excited to have hosted a WASH International Volunteer Mr Nathan the founder of A Ripple humanitarian NGO that provide WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and Medical care.

Nathan is an expert in WASH programming. He travelled to save lives of refugees and Ugandans struggling with diseases due to unsafe water wells, which are used for drinking.

Food Distribution

At 8:00 am morning, hundreds of refugees and Ugandans were already at P4T Compound waiting to receive their food relief ration from P4T funded by Pious Projects of America, a US Charity organization, and Nominal.

Nyirahabimana Sifa, a 34 years old refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was among the 2500 people who lined up at P4T distribution centre.

In addition to food distribution it was also distributed none-food like clothes, shoes, neckes to more than 100 of the most vulnerable people.

These items are invaluable for those that spend all of their money on feeding their families, and for that reason can not afford to purchase them by themselves.

For 2023, The Pious Projects of America, a US Charity organization, and Nominal donated USD 12,886 for Food Basket Distribution (FBD).

The Food Basket distribution benefited directly to 250 Most Vulnerable Households (MVH) and indirectly impacted lives of over 1,250 vulnerable individuals in Kyangwali refugee settlement and host communities with 8.25 tonnes of food and none food items to enable them survive food insecurity for a whole month. We distributed rice, poshos, beans, cooking oil, salt and soap.

Over 60% of this population eat only one meal a day and some families spend the whole day without eating and this forces their children to fail to continue with their studies. The families were extremely grateful and overwhelmed as many are struggling to provide food for their families. Sifa was so grateful because they were cooking the last of their bean on the fire.
