 A Frosty February

I ate a clock yesterday…It was very time consuming…(cue laughter)..

I felt a little bit of writer’s block in an attempt to start this newsletter, and as I was thinking what to write about as we enter into March (and wrap up February) the one thing I was stuck on was Daylight Savings and how something in the Farmers Almanac from, I don’t know, 876 BCE, could still be relevant and practised today.

As I went down that vortex of existential thinking I realized that so many of our modern day decisions are determined by things that felt practical thousands of years ago. Although I use hyperbole and am aware that DST is not thousands of years old, I feel like we ask “why” to such things that so infrequently remain observed in a time (now) that seem so unbelievably unnecessary? Yes, I understand that circadian rhythms and waking up with the sun was important at some point, but now we have clocks, so the notion of setting them back and forth so that they align with the sunrise that we’re supposed to wake up with, is in itself paradoxical…Please chime in if I’m wrong, but it seems crazy.

I know, this newsletter is largely about logistics and transportation, but it made me think. And as you are already very aware, I like to share my random thoughts with you to kick off these monthly updates. Anywhoodles, I vote against daylight savings time, in Fall…In Spring, they are kind of nice! And I’m probably not alone in anticipating the “extra” hour of sleep we get (in hopes that our puppies and newborns intrinsically know they are supposed to follow the sun and not the lights we have been blessed with since 1879…)

Okay, so what notable things happened in February? A lot. The aftermath of devastating earthquakes in Turkey. I know I like to make light of a lot of things that have serious undertones, but the devastation and personal loss that is still being discovered is anything but light. It seems that several building codes were not closely followed in the economic explosion of Turkey (which now seems like a bad idea). But before I criticize economic growth over safety, I think we just need to appreciate each other and realize that human life and dignity should trump any fiscal advancement. My thoughts are with the families who are continually going through the aftermath of that tragedy, and I am, for once, appreciative of scrupulous building codes (never thought I’d say that especially after my small swimming pool took 6 months and 44 permits to be approved).

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl again…What a surprise, I forget the exact stats but I’m pretty sure the Chiefs overcame a 200 point halftime deficit and Patrick Mahomes completed 156 passes to Travis Kelce for a total of 800 yards and 14 touchdowns in the 4th quarter allowing them to win, in their 3rd Super Bowl appearance in 4 years (on a seemingly broken ankle, mind you…) I now feel that parity in the NFL is no longer restored and KC is taking the form of the Pats from the early 2000s (you may be able to tell from my cadence that I am not a Chiefs fan). But congrats on those of you who are! And sorry to the Eagles fans who experienced their best regular season ever only to lose to a QB who may himself be an alien disguised as a super athlete who sounds like Kermit the Frog with strep throat.

And now for the Woodbine part. No, unfortunately we have not gotten into the snow removal business. One that is probably lucrative this year considering that we are seemingly negotiating with the fluffy white stuff on a weekly basis. I’m hoping business is good for the snowplow drivers who are up at the wee hours of the morning clearing our roads. The last time someone was able to capitalize on fluffy white stuff at this rate, they made a post-mortem documentary on him on Netflix called “Narcos”.

Aside from the unpredictable road conditions which have been many, we are going strong! Woodbine had a record February as clients continue to trust us with their usual shipping lanes, as well as calling on us for different lanes and referring us to their counterparts to include us in their circle of quotes.

Our new TMS- "Rose Rocket" has officially been launched (no pun intended). We are super excited to get this going and very hopeful that this will improve our service to you- as we implement more technology into Woodbine! Of course with this transition, there will be some minor hurdles (if were being honest), so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Since I started this newsletter with a terrible dad joke, I will not include one in the conclusion. I will finish with a short “thank you” because it is you, our valued clients, who keep us motivated and going. And for the record, the baby and puppy analogy with regards to daylights savings time was a real one since I am presently managing the temperamental sleep cycles of both (PS they are on pace to be best friends, as per the photo below).

Thanks again for your business, and until next time, wishing you all the very best.

3 factors affecting our currency that will hurt Canadians for years to come

Unfortunately, Canadians will have to get used to a weaker, range-bound loonie for some time. Those days of traveling south and having our dollar on par seem like a distant memory, and will only get more distant in the years to come as three key factors continue to influence our currency.

Leafs Notebook: Taking stock of goaltending, the core, the coaching staff, and the forward depth ahead of the stretch run

With the dust now settled on his moves this year, the jury is still out on a number of decisions. No roster in the league is going to be perfect, especially not in a hard-cap system built to enforce parity.

A GM has to make his bets to shore up as many areas as possible, and Dubas has certainly made a number of them. Let’s discuss.
