Upcoming Village Walks

Find out how to take part!

On Saturday 28th August 2021, the Bugthorpe War Memorial Committee is planning two very different kinds of walks.

An Afternoon Stroll

Firstly, why not join an afternoon stroll on the afternoon of Saturday 28th August 2021? The walk will start from the village hall at 2.30pm. The route is approximately 2 miles and will include some road walking as well as along public footpaths, avoiding fields with cattle. This walk is just for fun and is not sponsored. If you don't fancy a walk you can just come along to the village hall for refreshments, and to welcome everyone back, from 3.30pm.

Garrowby Sponsored Walk

Alternatively, why not take part in the Garrowby Sponsored Walk? This walk will start at 10am on Saturday 28th August 2021 and aim to complete a 14 mile circular walk. This walk will start from Bugthorpe Village Hall then visit Kirby Underdale, Bishop Wilton, Full Sutton and Skirpenbeck before returning to Bugthorpe Village Hall.

The village hall was built in 1925 by the people of Bugthorpe. It serves as a memorial to those who served in the First and Second World Wars. Over the years it has provided a meeting place for many occasions and continues to be used for parties, a polling station and village events. To ensure the hall is kept in excellent condition the sponsored walk is being held to raise money to go towards the replacement of the distinctive circular windows in the gable ends, roof repairs, replacement toilet flooring, a new cooker and updating the climbing frame. This will allow the hall to continue to be an asset to the village, available for all to use.

You can choose how to participate

  • If you would like to take part in the Garrowby Sponsored Walk and collect sponsors for Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute, you can either collect a sponsor form from Bob at the Post Office, download one from the website or email Janet Wardell at jmwardell163@gmail.com
  • Alternatively, you may walk without collecting sponsors by giving a £10 donation to the institute, you can then enjoy the challenge of walking 14 miles whilst receiving support along the way - route provided, no chance of getting lost!
  • You can sponsor a member of the committee to complete the walk, thereby contributing to the upkeep of this valuable community resource - see Bob Crow at the Post Office.
  • Take part in the Afternoon Stroll and enjoy refreshments at the end.
  • Join us for refreshments and a get together at 3.30pm on Saturday 28th August at the village hall and welcome back those taking part in both walks.

BugClub Launch!

We will also be letting everyone know further details about the launch of BugClub during refreshments after the walks. We have a very exciting event booked in for our first meeting and we can't wait to let everyone know about it!

During the past strange year there have been frequent occasions when we have looked forward to when things get ‘back to normal’. With this in mind the Village Hall Committee and the Website Team have been thinking of different village events that hopefully will be able to take place as lockdown eases. There is a range of ideas to cater for all ages and interests in the form of a club for everyone -

BUG CLUB!

BugClub is just shorthand for events organised for people and families in Bugthorpe and surrounding areas. No joining fee or membership needed, just regular events that people can dip in and out of depending on their interests.

The sort of ideas we have come up with include:

• Pop up Pub Nights, Race Night, Bingo, Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives

• Local History, Gardening, Local Wildlife

• Barn Dance, Wine Night, Village Business Fair, Village Auction

Of course the list is endless. Anyone will be able to put forward an idea and organise an evening e.g. to raise money for a favourite charity or just for fun. These would be alongside annual favourites like the 6 Nations Rugby afternoons which have proved to be very successful.

A calendar of events is currently being compiled to get Bug Club under way but in the meantime there is one date for your diary...

• Saturday 7th August 2:30pm Village Walk followed by refreshment at the Village Hall. This will also be an opportunity to welcome home those taking part in the planned 14 mile Sponsored Walk aiming to raise money to replace the round windows at the hall.

For the most up to date information visit the website, but we will be in touch shortly with more information about the launch and further dates.
