President's Message

Hello Kern River Valley,

Where should I start other than WOW with the month of March. Snow locally and in the high country, then warm rain causing devastating flooding in our valley then more snow again. Yes we needed this snow and have asked for it to happen, clearly with all the prayers being sent we may have received a bit more water in one year than we could be ready for.

On the positive side if all goes as projected, come the first week of July we will have a lake at full capacity (568,000-acre feet) according to the Corp of Engineers and statements from our lake's water master.

Now some not so great news. The 32nd Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby start-date had to be postponed until May 20, 2023 due to the amount of debris on the lake surface and shorelines. With that said, we have also extended the cutoff date for entering the derby until May 20 at 7am sharp when the event kicks off.

We need to stress public safety; we want to make sure our anglers are safe and have a great event. At this time, our United States Forest Service has a decree in place allowing all of us to gather driftwood along the shoreline. I would also ask locals who are interested to reach out the forest service regarding gathering of this wood for home use as fuel for the fireplaces, once this material dries it will a great source of free fuel.

This past weekend roughly twenty volunteers took to the shoreline to start the cleanup. I personally was overwhelmed by the amount of debris on the shoreline. Our teams which Included Ranger Al Watson, First District Supervisor Phillip Peters, Eva Hollmann with her team, myself with my family along with Tommy Lee, Janet Roberts, Lisa Marie Laughlin along with a few others gathered multiple loads of wood and stacked it at the highwater line for everyone to pick thru.

I was also informed by Ranger Watson the United States Forest Service will have two twenty-man crews continuing this cleanup starting Wednesday April 5,2023. If my count is correct, we left a total of 14 piles of timber from Auxiliary thru Old Isabella for you to go through if you wish.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help with the cleanup. Yes, it is a start but it shows when we (local volunteers) jump in to expedite the process ourselves we can make a difference.

Our general membership meeting will take place on April 12, 2023 which is hosted by 178 Bar and Grill in the large room. Our guest speaker is Joey Dosen, president of Ridgecrest Area Association of Realtors who is going to provide us some insight on current market conditions in our area and surrounding regions.

Please RSVP if you wish to attend as we tend to exceed capacity at times with our luncheons. Thank you for taking the time from your day to read this article and please utilize your chamber, we are here for you.

Thank you,

Fred Clark, President
