News from the Rescue - By: Adriane Cooper & Sid Williams

What the heck did we do in January?

Well, one thing that happened was Sid over-committed herself and took in 4 extra medical cases (and she still had Peep for most of the month)!

JK on the over-commitment but it was a crazy month!

Bob: we took in Bob New Year's Eve - he was rescued from an abuse situation where his tail was cut off and he was attacked by what we assume was a dog. He was stitched up by Minn-kota PAAWS and is not available for adoption and the most sweet/loving boy <3.

Robyn Sparkles: an 8-month-old pregnant mama cat. We were happy to take Miss Sparkles in so she can have her kittens in a warm/safe environment with any extra assistance she may need. She gave birth to 5 kittens on January 27th, 4 of those kittens were healthy, but unfortunately the first was stillborn.

Tres (as in uno, dos, tres): Tres was a medical surrender, his owner could not afford his medical needs. He had a leg injury that wasn't healing, and his leg was rotting off his body. We spoke with our vet and the best solution was a full leg amputation. He is healing up and doing great!

Morgan: this special kitty was brought to us by a good Samaritan that live-trapped Morgan after they noticed that she was injured. Her back legs appeared to be non-functional and at first we were so worried the only option would be euthanasia as she was so badly injured. But the x-ray showed things might not be as bad as they seem! With some medical care and TLC she already gained some function in her back legs! She can stand to eat now! She may still need one amputation, and her future isn't certain, but we are hopeful!

Peep Update: Peep was still not improving steadily at our rescue so we found this amazing rescue that works with medical cases like Peep's and they believe he has zero sphincter function and will need prolonged care. The rescue that took him in is We 3 Besties in New Prague, MN, being located closer to the Minneapolis/St.Paul area they have access to more specialized care then we do in rural MN!

Peep on his way to We 3 Besties! Already he has improved with their experienced caregivers!

Tres feeling SO much better after his amputation. He is nothing but purrs now!

Bob had a rough time before he came to Smiley's - but he has recovered so well from his injuries and is the sweetest thing.

Non-medical intakes in January:

We took in Biggy Smalls (the biggest cat ever).

Intakes for February:

We have 9 kittens coming in this week, a kitty who is living outside in Fertile, and a mom and her 5-month old kitten who had been living outside and for now are being taken care of by a volunteer at their house.

Lots of our kitties got adopted!  Doja & Forest were able to be adopted as a pair! Yay!!! Also going to their forever homes in January were Karen, Gato, Annabelle, Elizabeth, Nova, Buddy the Elf, and Jackie.

Dog Rescue Building

If you have been following Smiley's for long at all you know a top priority for us right now is starting construction on a dog rescue building. Thanks to our donors and the incredibly generous donation of labor by Jordan Olson we are on track to open this facility in May 2023.

There is an urgent need for dog rescue space in the area. We are so excited that this project is moving forward. We have worked hard to figure out how to make it the best facility it can be for the dogs we will care for, all the while being on a VERY tight budget. We will keep you updated!

Click below for detailed information on how you can help with this project. Thank you!

THANK YOU!!!

To all our donors and supporters: we can not thank you enough for making what we do possible. You are saving lives with your donations. This past month this was especially obvious - most of our medical intakes would likely have been euthanized if not for Smiley's. And Robyn Sparkle's kittens wouldn't have stood much of chance out in the cold with such a young mom. Please know you change these animals' lives!

You are HEROS!
