Valley of Volunteers

It has taken many hands and hearts to bring to pass the opening of the House of Grace Pregnancy Centre.  Embarking upon this journey in the Spring of 2021 has led me to experience the building of community and family. For me this experience has been about connecting with others and linking hearts to the common purpose & vision for the House of Grace in the Cowichan Valley. Through this journey I have connected with many people that have enriched my life, and for that I am thankful.

We all have different reasons for volunteering, these may include connecting to others or maybe participating in something that is good for your mind & body, or maybe we are doing it to bring fun or fulfilment to our lives.  Whatever our reason is, we know that being a part of something bigger than ourselves has its rewards.

Please let me introduce to you two of our (many) volunteers who are team/family members of the House of Grace. Their names are Ashlynn and Elfrieda.  Here's a little bit about who they are and why they are here.

Ashlynn’s Volunteer Story

In the early 90’s on a regular school day I had a friend pull me aside, break down in tears and tell me she had just discovered she was pregnant. In that moment of complete uncertainty we went to see the school counselor and within 10 minutes of being there, the counselor had made an appointment for my friend to have an abortion the next morning. As my friend sat in crisis with tears of confusion and despair, the “comforting” words coming from the adult were, “It’s OK, it will all be over soon” and “Your parents don’t even have to know.” I sat there in absolute shock and horror as I witnessed what was deemed as “choice” when no other options were given.

As we walked out of that office, we talked about all the options available to her. My friend never went to that appointment the next morning and she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl - they are living a full and happy life. That day in the counselor's office my heart broke for every other woman who may find herself in that same situation. When I heard about the House of Grace opening in Duncan, I knew I needed to find out more. After joining a group of women for a couple meetings, I knew this is where I needed to be and what I had experienced all those years ago led me to today. The spark that God lit in my soul back in high school, burns now like a passionate flame to see those whose lives have been impacted by an unexpected pregnancy touched by His grace.

Elfrieda’s Volunteer Story

While fully seeking an opportunity to volunteer in Duncan, a friend of mine shared the vision of the House of Grace. At that time, it was in the faith and planning stage. I have always had a heart for single moms and babies. Something inside of me said yes, I want to be a part of this project. I could see how valuable this service would be in the Cowichan Valley, and how many physical, emotional, and spiritual needs could be met for women and families faced with an unexpected pregnancy. Soon after the building was leased, I and several other volunteers got busy collaborating and setting up the new office space, multipurpose room, storage space and the Dahlia Boutique. (The boutique is where new moms can shop for maternity and baby clothing and accessories at no cost to them).

Being a relative newcomer to the Cowichan Valley, House of Grace has offered me a wonderful opportunity to build lasting friendships with staff and volunteers, participating in the training program, as well as learning about other services in our community. Most of all it has been a walk of faith, commitment, and love for the women we serve. I thank God for this opportunity to be able to utilize my gifts and skills to contribute in any way possible. This experience has enriched my life and I look forward to continued service at the House of Grace.
