Bryn Du Mansion - Life/Local/Legacy - August 2020

Welcome to the Bryn Du Mansion! With a mission of historical preservation and cultural, recreational, educational and artistic experiences, there is always something happening.

What's happening?

Porreca Sculpture Exhibit

Bryn Du is extremely proud to welcome Sculpture Artist, Robert Porreca, and his one-of-a-kind exhibit to the grounds near the Bryn Du Art Center. Porreca's work has been shown nationally and is coming "home" to central Ohio for the first time ever. Porreca is an award-winning artist who's unique sculptures will grace the lawn of Bryn Du until the end of September. It is free to visit the grounds to walk among the sculptures. Please contact the Bryn Du office regarding sales of the pieces.

Have you ever wondered...?

Every year in late August, the Bryn Du campus is taken over by a whole lot of people... have you ever wondered, "What are they all doing at Bryn Du?!" On the morning of Saturday, August 29th, the 15th annual Newark Catholic High School "RUN THE DU" cross country invitational will return to Bryn Du. High school and middle school runners from across Central Ohio will compete in a multitude of races for individual medals and team trophies. So, now you know what's happening and can cheer them on as you drive by!

Take-Away Art Courses

This summer, the kids have been treated to a really fun way to learn at home - "take-away" art courses! These classes include a box of supplies, and instruction and interaction with their teachers by way of a closed, private facebook group. Themes so far have included weaving, natural ink and mark making, drawing and watercolor painting. The kids are raving about their new found skills... and can't stop making art! Upcoming "take-away" courses can be found online.

COPA Visits Bryn Du

A few weeks ago, we were thrilled to welcome the Central Ohio Plein Air group (COPA) to the Bryn Du grounds. From 8 am until noon on July 11th, artists brought their easels, paints and brushes and set-up around the grounds to create masterpieces from the inspiration around them. Bryn Du Art Center instructor and local artist, Tonya Ramsey, is shown above (with Quincy!) painting the Bryn Du barn.

COVID and Events

Both spring and summer events have been compromised due to COVID - we missed seeing everyone at the Taste of Granville, Annual Daffodil Show, sports on the Great Lawn and many many weddings! Most of our affected events have rescheduled for a later date but we are working with all to find the best solution to their unique situations. But despite it all, we still continue to hold socially distanced events as is appropriate, and are open for business! Let us know if you have an inquiry about one of our many locations.

Who is Robert Porreca?

If you've been a part of the Bryn Du family for awhile, you might recognize Robert Porreca's name! He was the 3rd place winner at the 2019 Bryn Du Art Show - a national juried art show of visual art and photography. Since developing a unique process with resins and cloth eight years ago, this professional artist has had his sculptures displayed across the country. Make sure to visit the lawn outside the Bryn Du Art Center to see a full exhibit of Mr. Porreca's work anytime before the end of September.

Quincy's History Corner

Hi Friends!

Do you like history as much as I do? I just learned that long-time owner of the Bryn Du Estate, Mr. John Sutphen Jones, made his fortune in coal and railroads. As a result, he had even more property than you might expect! Mr. Jones owned land from east of Jones road all the way to Clear Creek, which is located at the Denison Golf Course. That's a lot of land! Not only did he build the golf course (it was designed by Donald Ross) but he also built the Granville Inn! Cool, huh?!

I hope you are all doing well! I'll have more fun facts for you next time!

Love, Quincy

The Bryn Du Commission

Did you know that the Bryn Du Commission was formed by the Village of Granville as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization to operate the mansion and grounds in 2004? The Commission is run by 7 volunteer board members who are incredibly dedicated to our community and Bryn Du's mission. We are pleased to welcome Denison's Dan Gibson as Bryn Du's newest Board Member! Welcome!

Bryn Du functions primarily from funding that comes from rental fees of both buildings and outdoor spaces, grants and donations. Day to day operations of Bryn Du are taken care of by three talented staff members, shown above at the 2020 Bryn Du Art Show opening celebration.
