Binamra's medical studies at Kathmandu University

Update August 16 2022
Binamra has recently been in touch to ask me to let everyone know how his studies are progressing. Now coming to the end of his 2nd year of studies, he is busy studying for exams. Binamra's 3rd and final large fee installment will be due in September this year, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Binamra writes -

Starting out on a good note. I have successfully passed my 1st year. This would not have been possible without your immense support and my hard work. I would like to thank all of you for the contributions that you have made to assist me with my studies. I am very appreciative of the support and it keeps me motivated.

In contrast to last year, COVID-19 has also settled and I was able to get more hands-on experience of medical school this year. The route also got a little tougher and daily schedules more hectic. Nevertheless, I had an amazing year. It also got easier to combat the Terai summer heat this year. Besides studies and a little soccer here and there, I attended a few in-house seminars at my college. I also gave a presentation about Inflammatory Bowel Diseases along with my friends. As a part of our Community Medicine curriculum, I attended a Community Development Program, where my friends and I went to the villages of Morang (one of the districts situated at Eastern Terai) Ward no.:12 to assess the health conditions and conduct a survey regarding the prevalence of Hypertension and Infectious diseases. During the month of October last year, I also went on a trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp(4550m.) I had a wonderful time breathing the thin air. The view was breathtaking and some more breaths for the view at 4550 meters.

The 2nd year of my medical school journey is almost to an end. I will be appearing for my 2nd Year final examinations in September this year, where I will take tests for 6 theory papers and 8 practicals, which will include different systems such as Gastrointestinal, Renal, Endocrinology, Hepatobiliary, Reproductive and the Central Nervous system. As this is the last examination for Basic science we must appear for two extra subjects, they are Community Medicine and Introduction to Clinical Medicine.

P.S. MBBS course in Nepal is divided into two years of basic science, 2.5 years of clinical science and 1-year internship.

My sincere gratitude,

Binamra.

Update October 25 2020

It is with much sadness that I report the sudden and extremely tragic death of Binamra's father Prakash Adhikari, CEO of the Himalayan Rescue Association on October 23. After a short battle, Prakash succumbed to COVID-19 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Prakash had devoted so freely of himself to the cause of the HRA for over a quarter of a century. He was a tireless campaigner for porter welfare and was responsible for the betterment of many porter's lives. He was also responsible for saving the lives of many trekkers, climbers and porters in the mountainous regions of Nepal.

Prakash's example will live on through his son Binamra who now needs our support more than ever to complete his medical studies.

Updated Aug 2020
Late last year, Prakash Adhikari, loyal Chief Executive of the HRA approached a few senior members of the HRA Alumni including Buddha Busnyat, Ken Zafren, Jim Duff and myself to humbly request financial support to assist his youngest son, Binamra to fulfil his dream to study medicine at Kathmandu University. Buddha, Ken, Jim and I were in unanimous agreement that this is a worthwhile opportunity for the alumni to support.

Binamra has now commenced his studies at Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Biratnaga Nepal, which is a Kathmandu University affiliated medical college. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Binamra is studying via online classes. Prakash is excited to see Binamra studying late into the night.

Unfortunately, studying medicine in Nepal does not come cheap with annual tuition fees of approximately $USD12388 plus hostel, registration and exam fees. It is estimated that all up, fees will be > $USD 48000 over the 5.5 year length of the degree (> $AUD 67000).

“Prakash Adhikari has selflessly devoted himself to the cause of the HRA for a quarter of a century. He has done this and more, all for a cause he really believes in. I know very few people in Nepal with such very moderate means giving of themselves so much for such a long time for a cause they believe to be higher than themselves. So, whatever the alumni can do will be very helpful.”
Dr Buddha Busnyat

I had the pleasure of meeting Binamra in late 2019. He is a highly intelligent young man who is dedicated to studying medicine with aspirations to provide care to the mountain populations of Nepal. I have no doubt, that with your help, Binamra will go on to achieve these goals.

Please give generously to assist Binamra to achieve his goals of completing his medical education so that he can serve the mountain communities of Nepal.
