How time flies by for us humans, it goes by much quicker for our little furry friends, with one human year being equal to 5-10 animal years, depending on breed and species. Younger animals also age much quicker, with our puppies and kittens soon becoming adults. With our pets developing rapidly, it is important to know the benefits of desexing at this critical stage in their lives.
There are very sound reasons to desex our beloved pets early including:
- Early desexing of females significantly reduces the risk of mammary(breast) cancer and ovarian cancer, as well as eliminating pyometra (a life-threatening womb infection).
- Early desexing of males significantly reduces the risk of testicular cancer and future prostate diseases, including cancer.
- For female dogs, avoiding the inconvenience and mess that accompanies a female dog in season and the hassle of locking in-season females away.
- Female cats on heat every 3 weeks can also be inconvenient to some people.
- For males, early desexing reduces aggression, and the incidence of straying (and spraying - cats) is greatly reduced.
- Eliminating unwanted litters and the difficulties of finding homes for the offspring.
We feel that these valid reasons are so important that we offer routine desexing surgery at greatly reduced prices to help our community with responsible pet ownership.
It is also important that we know at which age our animals can be desexed. In small breed dogs and cats, the optimal time for desexing is 5-6 months of age; for medium breed dogs, it is 6-9 months; for large breed dogs, it’s 9-12 months; and for giant breed dogs, it is 12-18 months. This variation in time between the dog breeds accounts for the proper joint development of different-sized dogs.
