FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

I write this month's message with a heavy heart, as our fraternity says goodbye to Rt. Worshipful Charles S. Sarbaugh. Brother Sarbaugh was raised in Metropolitan Lodge No. 11 in 1977 and affiliated with

Richmond Randolph Lodge No. 19 in 2005, becoming a Life Member in Perpetuity in 2007. He was a good friend and mentor to many of our members. While many of us did not have the opportunity to know him personally, we certainly know his name. This truly illustrates the power of how a good man can have an influence on even those with whom he rarely (or never) meets. When we engage with our brothers as a mentor or coach, we not only pass along our masonic knowledge, but we lay the building blocks of our legacy so that when we ourselves are called home to the Celestial Lodge above, we too will be remembered. God Bless you Brother Sarbaugh.

“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter
hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as
much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first
blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that last
blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” - Jacon Riis

I was recently introduced to this quote while listening to a speech by James Clear, the author of the book "Atomic Habits". My first thought was the metaphor of the rough and perfect ashlars. Those two big stones sitting at the foot of the Worshipful Master in the East that represent a man's transformation from his rough state, to that of a man worthy of entrance to that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. But how do we get there? By slowly breaking off the corners of the rough stone with a small wooden gavel? Is that even possible? Operatively, the gavel would have been made of a different material or at least have been accompanied by a chisel. But symbolically, not only is it possible, it is perhaps the best way to do it. Making small positive adjustments to our daily habits is the most sustainable way to make lasting change. It's not always easy, but keep chipping at it and next thing you know, you're looking at a smooth(er) stone.

Finally, thank you again to all of you who helped organize our recent Table Lodge! Especially Wor. Oran Jamison, Bro. Tyler Esteppe, Bro. Chris Martone, Wor. Donald Moro and Bro. Brian Barte. Also to all of those who presented a toast, or responded to one (my apologies to anyone who I forgot to mention).  It was a wonderful event. My favorite review was from a visiting brother who commented that it was the "most fun he's had in masonry!"

Take care my brothers.

S&F,

Shane Flansburg

Worshipful Master

Photo and commentary from Right Worshipful Donald Traser:

"It still stands at the corner of Grove Avenue and Sheppard Street, behind the VMFA.  Despite the name on the program, during my lifetime it was always called First Congregational Christian Church.  30-some years ago they moved WAAAAY out into Chesterfield County and built an extremely ugly facility.  This nice building was sold to the Reformed Presby Church, I think they call it All Saints.  It had a Hall organ, a smaller sibling of the one at Saint Andrew's, which was moved to the new location but is unused."
