WORLD ASTHMA DAY...

To mark World Asthma Day 2024, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme "Asthma Education Empowers." GINA underscores the importance of empowering individuals with asthma through proper education to effectively manage their condition and recognize when to seek medical assistance. Healthcare professionals are urged to enhance their understanding of the ongoing preventable morbidity and mortality associated with asthma, as well as the evidence-based strategies for its management. This ensures they can offer reliable information and optimal treatment to their patients.

Hay Fever & Seasonal Asthma...

As part of World Asthma Day, we wanted to highlight Hay Fever and Seasonal Asthma. We've observed a significant rise in the number of clients seeking help for symptoms resembling hay fever and asthma.

In the United Kingdom, hay fever and seasonal asthma are prevalent respiratory conditions that affect a significant portion of the population. According to recent statistics:

Hay Fever Prevalence: Approximately 20% of the UK population suffers from hay fever, with symptoms typically peaking during the spring and summer months when pollen levels are highest. Seasonal asthma exacerbations are common during peak pollen seasons, affecting a substantial number of individuals who experience worsened asthma symptoms due to allergen exposure.

As the seasons change in the United Kingdom, many individuals brace themselves for the onset of hay fever and seasonal asthma. These conditions, exacerbated by environmental factors such as pollen and air pollution, can significantly impact one's quality of life. Understanding their causes, symptoms, and management strategies is crucial for effectively coping with their effects.

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common allergic reaction to airborne substances such as pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. When these allergens come into contact with the nose, eyes, or throat, the immune system responds by releasing histamines, triggering symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itching, and watery eyes.

Seasonal asthma, on the other hand, refers to asthma symptoms that worsen during specific times of the year, typically when pollen levels are high. Pollen can irritate the airways, leading to inflammation, constriction of the bronchial tubes, and increased mucus production, resulting in symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Monitor Pollen Counts: Stay informed about pollen forecasts in your area, especially during peak seasons. Limit outdoor activities on days when pollen levels are high, particularly in the early morning and evening when pollen counts tend to be highest.

Keep Indoor Environments Clean: To minimize exposure to pollen, keep windows and doors closed during peak pollen times. Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to remove pollen and other allergens from indoor air. Regularly vacuum and dust your home to reduce indoor allergen levels.

Use Medications Wisely: Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and decongestants can help alleviate hay fever symptoms. For seasonal asthma, bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids may be prescribed by a healthcare professional to manage symptoms and prevent asthma attacks.

Practice Allergy Avoidance: Avoid mowing the lawn or spending prolonged periods outdoors during peak pollen seasons. Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes from pollen. Shower and change clothes after being outdoors to remove pollen from your body and clothing.

Create a Personalised Asthma Action Plan: Work with your healthcare provider to develop an asthma action plan tailored to your specific needs. This plan should outline daily medications, asthma triggers to avoid, and steps to take in case of an asthma exacerbation or emergency.

Seek Professional Guidance: If hay fever or seasonal asthma symptoms persist despite self-management efforts, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment options. Allergy testing may be recommended to identify specific allergens triggering your symptoms.

Salt Therapy Benefits For Hay Fever & Seasonal Asthma...

Salt therapy presents a natural and efficient method for alleviating symptoms associated with hay fever and seasonal asthma. By leveraging the therapeutic attributes of salt, this non-invasive treatment may aid in:

Reducing Airway Inflammation: The inhalation of salt particles may help reduce inflammation in the airways, alleviating symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness associated with hay fever and seasonal asthma.

Improving Mucus Clearance: Salt therapy may aid in thinning and loosening mucus, making it easier to expel from the airways. This can help individuals with seasonal asthma breathe more easily and reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.

Antibacterial Properties: Salt possesses natural antibacterial properties, which may help reduce the risk of respiratory infections commonly associated with hay fever and seasonal asthma exacerbations.

Enhancing Respiratory Function: Regular salt therapy sessions may improve overall respiratory function, including lung capacity and oxygenation, leading to better symptom management and quality of life for individuals with hay fever and seasonal asthma.

Consistency is Key: While some individuals may experience immediate relief after a few salt therapy sessions, others may require regular and consistent sessions to achieve noticeable benefits. Patience and consistency are essential when incorporating salt therapy into a comprehensive treatment plan.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

'Children With Challenges Support Group'

Sharing client's interests, hobbies or events with our readers.

Introducing: Kerry Purcell, mum to Harry who has been a salt clinic regular since 2019, treatment for Asthma, chest infections and coughs.

"Hi, I run a group for children facing challenges with my good friend Hayley Randall, where we help parents and carers. It basically runs itself; it's an amazing group where people totally understand where you are coming from. We share stories, help each other, provide that shoulder to lean on and assist with schooling, EHCPs, understanding their specific needs, challenges, and experiences.

We often hear about how joining the group has positively impacted their lives, improved their skills, or helped them overcome challenges. The best thing is they can share their personal stories without judgment, as every child is different, and every story is different. We have helped so many children, pointing them in the right direction to get the right help, whether it be schooling or supportive charities such as @Ride2Give.

We created our own community, and sometimes this can mean everything to some parents. It's great to connect with others who share similar experiences and challenges, develop friendships, and find emotional support, a sense of belonging and knowing there is always someone to listen.

My son Harry has autism, dyspraxia, and hypermobility and having a child with needs like Harry inspired me to start Children with Challenges. Starting this group was a personal endeavor, driven by my own personal experiences and a desire to support others facing similar challenges.

One of Harry's challenges was getting him into a special needs school, which was very stressful. It was about being his voice and making sure he was heard, getting him where he should be with the right help and support.

Having our group's support keeps me motivated and our special needs group aims to provide a space where families and individuals facing similar circumstances can share experiences, access resources, and find guidance specific to autism, hypermobility, dyspraxia, ADHD, and so on. We do have template letters if needed, for example, asking for your child's school file, etc.

You can find out more about on via our Facebook page: Children With Challenges, it is a private space where our members can help each other by sharing their stories, engaging in conversations. A lot of our parents have made great friendships. It is a private group, so nobody can see, which can mean everything to some people."
