Hello wonderful WHECES Families! Calling all readers! The Read-A-Thon is here! See the message below from our amazing Read-A-Thon committee chair, Sharon, for information on this fun and educational fundraiser.
We love books! Mark your calendar for the Scholastic Book Fair the week of February 13th through 17th in the school auditorium! Students will visit the book fair with their classes and make wish lists. They can purchase books at lunch or after school. If you’d like to purchase books for your students, come by the auditorium after school on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday until 4 pm and on Tuesday until 3 pm. We will also have a Book Fair Family Night on 2/15 from 5-7 pm. The 5th-grade team will be selling food and drinks and some of your favorite WHECES teachers will be reading books to the kids! It’s Black History Month! This is an opportunity to celebrate, learn, and reflect inside and outside of the classroom. Black Lives Matter at School's Week of Action is February 6-10 and includes a national committee of educators organizing for racial justice in education. More information on Black Lives Matter at School's Week of Action and resources. Please join us at the new Fishbone Seafood in Woodland Hills on 2/22 for Restaurant Night in honor of Black History Month! Fishbone Seafood is a fast-food seafood restaurant and market, featuring southern-style seafood specialties. The new location in Woodland Hills is owned by Darlene Melvin and Kenneth Bridges. See the flyer below for more information. It is not too late to donate to the HERO campaign! See the link and more information below. Wear your HERO shirt every Friday and Help Education Remain Outstanding!
Thank you,
The PATT Board |

Dear WHECES Families, Happy February! Happy Black History Month! Check out this month’s Kindness Starts with Me campaign February Choice Board for fresh ideas and resources, including activities for educators, students, families, and our ‘Building Community and Social Awareness’ section, celebrating Black History Month. Together, we can and will make our world a more caring, just, and kind place. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1HOMLadGu8owl86S5Q-f4cx392XitJ2x-Fn4dKd8paQ0/present?slide=id.g1eaa0af4973_19_7 Safer Internet Day Information for Schools In keeping with our commitment to student safety, LAUSD will participate with the ICAC Task Force’s annual Safer Internet Day campaign. For the second straight year, the task force has identified sextortion as a prevalent issue nationwide. (See the flyer below.) Let’s encourage LAUSD families to #StartTheConversation. |

Ready, Set, Read: Read-A-Thon Is On! Our February Read-A-Thon is off to a roaring start, and our kids are reading up a storm! It's been a delight to see them chatting about the books they're reading during the first few days. If your child hasn’t signed on yet, take a moment this weekend to help them log in so they can start entering their reading and decorating their owlvatar! If you can't find the email with your child's login (sent Feb 1 with the subject line "Authorize <Student>'s Read-A-Thon account"), email your child's name to ungersma@gmail.com and we'll resend it. Looking for more reading material to keep your kiddo engaged with Read-A-Thon? Head to the Woodland Hills Library (open Mon/Wed/Sat 10-6, T/Th 12-8, Fri 1:30-5:30) to pick up some books and your FREE BOOKMARK for Read-A-Thon! Look for the WHECES Read-A-Thon envelope at the checkout desk and tell them you're a WHECES reader, and the librarian will give you a bookmark. Since February is also Black History Month, this is a great time to get your kids reading fiction and non-fiction about Black history and contributions to our country. The Woodland Hills Library has a display in the children's section for Black History Month with some great selections for all ages; they also have some excellent resources and book suggestions here: https://www.lapl.org/african-american. Call for Photos: If your kids are enjoying the Read-A-Thon, we want to see it! Snap a pic of your child at the library or reading in their favorite spot at home (especially if they like to read in a silly position!); email your photos to ungersma@gmail.com or text them to 650-391-8446. Photos will be included in the Read-A-Thon montage and in the yearbook. |

HERO LAST CALL FOR HEROs!!!!!! I MEAN IT THIS TIME! We are getting ready to send the large HERO banner to print for all families who contributed $750 (and 5th-grade families who contributed to the 5th-grade fund AND $500+ to HERO) but we want to make ONE FINAL CALL to get donations so you can get your child/family name on it! We’ll continue taking donations throughout the year but I need to get that banner made so we can wave those names proudly. Will you make your donation today? The HERO campaign is still several thousands away from reaching the $150,000 goal and if every single family donated, we could reach that goal. Remember, each family who donates to HERO will receive one (1) HERO car magnet, and a t-shirt for each child presently attending WHECES. Also, donations of $750 and up get you lots and lots of goodies! AND, the winning class (TK-2 and 3-5) with 100% participation gets a pizza party and a gift certificate to Cup and Cone. WOW!!!!! Please donate to HERO using the online form listed below or fill out the attached form and turn it in to your classroom OR drop it off your form/payment in the HERO BASKET located in the office (please do not place it in the red PATT box).
https://www.mypatt.org/hero-campaign OR you can donate (in one lump sum only) via VENMO at @patt-team. Please be sure to include “HERO”, your child’s name/teacher, and shirt size in the comments section. Please be sure to have your child wear their HERO shirt (not to be confused with Spirit Wear shirts) EVERY Friday for HERO FRIDAYS! If you have ANY questions, please contact me at wheceshero@gmail.com.
We appreciate you and your support and thank you for Helping Education Remain Outstanding!
