Training at The Red!

We welcomed Ryan Talbot, a volunteer animal trainer with experience at Full Moon Farm and Wolf Park, for the weekend to give a workshop at the Red. It was a fabulous opportunity for our valued volunteers, staff, and friends to come learn about cooperative care and best practices. Sixteen people were in attendance and everyone left with a heightened sense of possibilities, respect, and appreciation for how we can do things with our animals. If he can get wolves to cooperate in their care, think what he can help us do with our wolf dogs! Ryan will be making additional visits to The Red as we continue to grow and we are fortunate to have him supporting our cause! Awwwoooo!

Nick Hof, board member and dog trainer and owner of Paws Look Listen, will be hosting our next training session on Sunday, Oct. 2. He will be covering basic training and teaching our volunteers best practices. We plan to have a professional training program in place for our volunteers to each work in harmony with the animals and each other. More training will be scheduled this fall as we move further into our enrichment phase.

Howling Thanks!

The Red has deep gratitude for all of its board members but one member in particular is a tireless (but understandably tired) animal advocate of the highest order, Paulina Romanelli. She often drives through the night from NC to The Red delivering animals or materials, or traveling on a rescue mission. She is also the person who brought us Ryan. Her deep commitment to anything wolf and wolfdog related is genuine. She never hesitates to jump in her car to save an animal, sleep in her car with an animal, and follow through on that animal's successful placement. She is deserving of a little shout out!

Building is winding down soon

As a new facility, where building only started at the end of February, we are proud of how far we have come. The first three 50 x 50 enclosures were slow going. But after three months, we were able to welcome our first resident animals. That is when we moved to cattle panel enclosures because this construction enabled us to build just as nicely but more efficiently. We now have eleven pens completed and one more in the works. Pen twelve is for our ambassador wolfdog, Nancy. Her pen will be front and center and she will be sure to charm you with her smile and her intelligence!

A valued member is gone too soon

It is with great sadness that we report our dear friend and valued supporter, Tanya Vance, has passed away after a short battle with an aggressive illness. She spent her lifetime in rescue and had her hands in many rescues regardless of breeds. She will always have her sweat in our soil. She was a hard worker on countless bitter Saturdays this past winter, stretching fence before her illness won out. We are proud to have two of her wolfdogs in our care and we will love them like our own. Come visit Finn and Lava.

Whose afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Not Don!

We are so grateful to announce Don Corsmeier as our Attending Vet at The Red. He is a certified wildlife vet, has an arsenal of ideas, equipment and experiences to pull from, and loves our puppy dogs! 😊 Recently we needed to vet all twelve animals to comply with a USDA requirement for licensing. This is no easy requirement for us. On the first day of vetting, he was able to catch and leash-walk nine of our twelve animals! Nine were handled head to tail and walked to the field scale. This was remarkable. The second day of vetting we hoped to get the last three tough guys done. We got two!---very shy little girls who were remarkable once he caught them. One boy remained and proved to be our biggest challenge. He was all that was standing between us and USDA licensing. But on the third day of vetting, Don won out. Paperwork is being completed and an inspection scheduled. And again, we are happy to welcome Don to The Red family!

USDA at the Red

We enjoyed meeting our USDA inspector and getting a walk-through to determine things we needed to do in order to be licensed. All the dog houses had to have wind/rain guard adjustments made, the basement needed to be sealed, the annual checkup of each animal had to happen, and field fencing went up over cattle panel to keep heads from popping through. Thanks to Mike Pflieger and his helper William Black (with support from various other UC Engineering students) the tasks were completed. We are ready.

Our volunteers

We continue to be blessed with an outpouring of incredible, hard-working volunteers who give us their Saturdays and sometimes Sundays, to work in our hot field building enclosures. We cannot thank these people enough for all they are doing. We are so grateful to be moving into a phase of animal enrichment. This is what they have worked so hard for. All volunteers working with animals must put in sixteen hours of volunteer time as well as take an online animal husbandry test required by our insurance. So these are very dedicated people who have become the greatest gift for our animals. Now the fun begins for them.

Improvements on the property

We are in the process of putting in a new bridge. This is going to be an incredible improvement over hopping across uneven culverts. And our bridge is quite cool: a flat bed from a tractor trailer! Watch for the finished project soon! We have a great need for a water line to the animal enclosures and we are still raising funds for this. We are getting close but we aren’t there yet. That is our next and highest priority. Please consider helping us if you can! See below.

A need for wheels - Does anyone have a gently used ATV they can donate to The Red? Our caretaker/vet tech has a long hike daily to the animal enclosures. Once winter is upon us, we will have a great need for an easier way for her to get to and from the animals. If you know of anyone. or a business that would like an advertising plug at The Red, we would greatly appreciate this and it would meet a tremendous need. Please message us on Facebook, via the contact form on our website, or email us at info@rrh-project.com. Thank you!

As a new 501c3, with monthly operating expenses and food and vet care for twelve animals, we are in need of monthly sponsors. Any dollar amount helps us. We encourage you to become a Friend of The Red by being a monthly sponsor. Your dollars go 100% to the animals. All of our work is volunteer based. Thank you for considering us in your charities.
