Grant Smith's solo art exhibition is available for all to enjoy until May 28th, and features Grant’s latest stencil and block prints of local animals along with his chalk drawings of pine trees from the Second Butte in Wycliffe and the backyards of houses along 106th Street Rails-to-Trails pathway. |

A few of Grant's thoughts about the artwork: "In my recent artwork, I have spent time in reverence of our local predators. Bears, cougars, wolves, coyotes, Canada lynx, wolverines, foxes, pine martens and badgers - their sentiency approximates our own and their physical beauty is tremendous. Also, I have reflected on what we were all taught in school, that predators keep a herd of prey animals from getting too large by killing the young, the old, the sick and the injured. However, the balance between predators and prey animals is a precarious one, easily upset by the loss and destruction of suitable habitat. And finally, Kimberley and Wycliffe are home to many distinctive pine and fir trees. Many of our local trees chronicle hard-lived lives growing atop the Buttes in Wycliffe or witnessing the growth of Kimberley as it has changed from a mining town to one of recreation, retirement and new families. |

Mountain Caribou Recovery Project by Grant Smith "In the hope of seeing the restoration of the mountain caribou to their former ranges in southern British Columbia and Idaho, I have spent time creating their shapes in wire and pegging them firmly back into place." The last, few remaining mountain caribou in the South Purcell herd were removed or abandoned to their fate in 2019. Less than 80 years ago, local residents remember seeing herds of mountain caribou numbering in the hundreds. In the coming decades, we need actions to bring the mountain caribou back to southeastern British Columbia and the United States: The remaining stands of inland old growth temperate rain forest need to be protected from clear cut logging, abandoned forestry service roads need to be decommissioned, recreation in sensitive areas needs to be curtailed and protected wildlife corridors across neighbouring watersheds need to be created. The artist’s proceeds of the sale of this unique artwork will go to Wildsight’s Mountain Caribou Recovery Program. See www.wildsight.ca/programs/mountaincaribou for updated information. |

"Shard" vs. "Helix". Sometimes you have to see the artwork in your home before you can make the decision to purchase. The piece that you thought was made for the space may not quite be what you expected, and vice versa. We are happy to help where we can. In this case, "Helix" by Rob Toller found a beautiful home and the perfect place to shine. "Shard" gets to hang out in the art gallery a little longer. |
