Hello and Happy Summer!

From Darcy -

Those of you who know me and David know we’ve played in a band for much of our lives, and for the most part, we have played with the same group of guys for over 36 years. We met Bob, our guitar player, in 1985. What I remember most about the night we all met, besides of course Bob’s incredible guitar playing, was his daughter, Sarah, dancing on his guitar case. In creating music with folks for so long, you become kind of a big family, and we watched Sarah and her sister Jessica grow up.

As the years passed, Sarah had three little ones of her own. Tobin hadn’t been gone long when her youngest, Helaina, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma. She was two years old…really? Don’t think for a split second the fact that someone so close to us was also dealing with childhood cancer was lost on me. One in a million?  What does that really mean?

Sarah is a single mother with three wonderful little girls. She was going to need some help. We made sure we took care of her immediate travel and parking expenses, and her friends and family took care of the rest. Helaina made some progress the first year here in Houston, but not enough, and Sarah began to search for something more. She found a doctor in New York who was having some success with an experimental treatment, so she asked if we could help with lodging and travel to and from New York. Of course we could!

She and Helaina traveled from Texas to New York and back countless times over the course of two years, and Helaina showed incredible progress! So much so that what was once an experimental treatment has now been approved by the FDA and will soon be available to children all across the country.

Would Sarah have been able to go to such lengths without our help?  Absolutely! She would have done anything for her baby, but we are honored to have been able to help! Helaina will start kindergarten in the fall, just like any other little girl, and for that, we could not be more grateful.
