Summertime schedule: Our last class session was May 29th. We will resume classes and monthly meetings in September. Our first monthly meeting will be on September 12th at 7 p.m. Topics to be determined. We will continue to meet in the training center room at the AIH on Dimond and the Old Seward Hwy until our new shop space is done. Please enter by the door near the Duluth Trading Company. |

New Shop Space: Construction on our new shop space at the Commercial drive AIH has started. We will most likely be in the new space sometime this November. We are being given approximately 1800 square feet of space in their store. We will have our own entrance and will be able to meet after store hours for classes and meetings. This new space will enable us to have bigger classes, more storage, and hopefully more tools. MANY, MANY THANKS TO AIH!!!!!!!! NEW SHOP SPACE |

SawStop Demo: The AIH SawStop demonstration on July 11th was amazing. If you’ve never seen the saw blade on the SawStop disappear 10 times faster than a car airbag inflates you’ve missed something incredible. The SawStop representative said he would come after our new shop is open and do another demo for us. Our table saw in the AIH shop area is a Saw Stop and it’s a great tool and certainly safer than an ordinary table saw. 67,000 people are injured per year with regular saws and over 4,000 amputations occur. |

Member Spotlight: Greg Lyall Greg Lyall visited Alaska the summer of 1967 with his grandparents. He grew up in San Diego enjoying a great family, spectacular weather, surfing, and a good work ethic. After a couple of summers working at a custom box and cabinet shop, the woodworking bug struck. He returned to Alaska in 1974 after a stint in LA working in a small engineering firm. It wasn’t long before he purchased a Mark V Shopsmith which just fit in his overcrowded 2 car garage. The Shopsmith still survives and was passed down to his son, Steve. After retirement, he finally had some time and space to set up a woodshop in a new home. His wife, Monica, encouraged him to build some furniture for the new place including six new dining chairs. She wanted them to all be different, wow! Since Greg is a self-taught woodworker, he built his first chair using a standard design from Fine Woodworking and began learning by doing. He improved his skills using hand and power tools, steam bending, design, and upholstery. After completing the six chairs, his interest turned to sculpting a chair. Who better to study than Sam Maloof? His current project is a chair based on Maloof’s dining chair. The chair includes a coopered seat, complex joinery and elegant shaped features. See the pictures showing the progress of the chair from a pile of 8/4 cherry. As a new board member for the woodworkers club, he is interested in helping the woodworking community and might find him teaching a woodworking class or two. When Greg is not in the shop, he’s either, cycling, flying to the family’s remote cabin or looking for more tools to buy |
