Dear Members,
As some of you may already know, KCDC has received the Jacobs Volume 2 report with appendices - identifying coastal erosion zones and maps that indicate a potential hazard to your property.
These reports can be found on our website under the tab CRU 2022 – Science 2022.
It is important to note that this report is not in line with the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement and as such, does not appropriately identify risk – however it appears that Council will use this report to plot their managed retreat strategy under the guise of protecting Council assets.
In February, CRU hosted a Round Table and invited all the Councillors. The purpose of this meeting was to explain to Councillors our concerns regarding Jacobs Volume 1 and to work out a communication strategy with Councillors. I received a letter from the mayor, in which he stated that it was imprudent for both him and his Councillors to attend. Nevertheless, 3 Councillors did attend – Pravanov, Halliday and Handford.
You can find the details on our website under tab CRU 2022 – February Round Table 2022.
As a result of these developments and the Council’s decision to include a Coastal Hazard Notation on all our LIMs (without consulting CRU as promised) – I am now calling for a Special General Meeting.
This is the first Special General Meeting that CRU has held in a decade.
The Meeting is scheduled for 26 March at 13:00 at the Seniors Hall @ 45 Ocean Road.
At this meeting, members will be informed of CRU’s position on these developments and the next steps we might take.
I urge all those members who are able - to please attend!
Regards,
Salima
