CABM Virtual Gala 2021! Our President and Founder, Ms. Makai Harif was awarded the Noble price recognizing her as an exceptional volunteer at the Afghan Women Center of Montreal ( AWCM ) Ms Harif had the honor of participating at the Gala ( Les Nobilie 2021 ) a superb & well-organised online event The event was filled with entertainments, awards, shows, dances and it was attended by many other volunteers across the city of Montreal. At the Gala there was a Nobile Award for 6 categories: Outstanding Volunteer, Group Volunteering, Volunteer Manager, Skills Volunteer, Corporate Volunteer Program, Public Volunteer. Makai Harif was a nominee in the category of Outstanding volunteers and was elected the winner of this Category. She expressed immense gratitude upon receiving this award, as it reflects the effort of the centre to assist the afghan women. |

The Nobile Trophy The trophy was awarded to the winners at the CABM gala on April 22, 2021. Inspired by the Latin word “nobelis” which has the meaning of someone generous or noble, it gives today a very special meaning to this evening of recognition of volunteer action in Montreal. |

The importance of Sanitary Measures AWCM members have been affected by COVID-19, these last few months with several members and family members becoming infected. One member lost someone due to cancer and immidiately after this the whole family members cought COVID-19. Fortunately, despite these hardship, they all recovered. The importance of respecting social distancing, wearing a mask in public, avoid indoor gatherings, washing hands and the importance of getting vaccinated is crucial, so it can lower the intensity of the symptoms. |

During April 2021 One of our elderly members suffered from an eye problem and subsequently caught the COVID-19 during her hospital follow up. During her hospitalization of 3 weeks, she had a lot of difficulties understanding the guidance from hospital personnel there. She was accompanied by the AWC services offered and benefitted from one of her children’s interpretation services. She almost lost hope having lung and chest pains. With her daughter’s assistance and treatments, she recovered successfully. |

We sincerely congratulate Wasima Fazeli for being selected as the recipient of the June Michel Bursary Award dedicated for Continuing Education and Training of the amount of $1,000 funded by the Zonta Club Montreal. After reviewing the applications, the award was based on her experience, the nominee’s input on the significant barriers immigrant survivors have to overcome. |

Volunteering at the AWCM Chandra Ky, as a member of the Asian immigrant community in Montreal, has volunteered to the cause against female immigrants racialization dear to the AWCM and is helping the Center from time to time with some French translation. |

Awareness to Action virtual roundtable, took place on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (ET). This event is part of a series of discussions that have taken place over the course of the past month to commemorate Asian Heritage Month in a dedicated effort to shine a spotlight on current issues to reflect the lived experiences of peoples of Asian descent in Canada. |

This year, Asian Heritage Month holds a unique timeliness as it comes at a crucial moment where anti-Asian racism is on the rise1 and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In alignment with the 2021 Asian Heritage Month theme “Recognition, Resilience & Resolve”, this virtual discussion, moderated by the Honorable Bardish Chagger, will convene members from Asian communities who discussed their bold programs and change initiatives aimed at supporting communities and combatting anti-racism. The AWC representatives were pleased to participate about their lived experiences and shares their concerns. |

The holy month of Ramadan is a time for reflection, prayer and absolving oneself of sin. While the focus of Ramadan is on fasting during the hours from sunrise to sunset. The entire month is an especially prominent time for Muslims, however, there is one night that holds extra meaning, and that night is Laylat-al-Qadr and this the reason why the AWC organized this special day to its members |

The AWCM Montreal delivered food for Iftar time to more than 45 families who live all over the greater Montreal, Longueuil, Brossard and Laval. It is considered the night when the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad SAW "A night worth more than 1000 months for Islam" |

Friday May 7th 2021 interview on CBC News Montreal of our Executive Director Victoria Jahesh by Sudha Krishnan ! On May 7th at 6pm CBC news, Victoria Jahesh had an interview about the AWC’s activities and an event that was organized by the AWCM members about the Holy Quran reading recitation (Khatm-et-Quran) on the occasion of the Power of Night held on the 27th of Ramadan which fell the same day of Mothers day's celebration. CBC News Montreal journalist Sudha Krishnan broadcast live questions to Victoria, the Center’s Executive Director, about the special meaning of this event and celebration of the Mothers Day on May 9th as well as other events and services offered by our Center. |

Cooperation between the Center and the Embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa The Center works for human rights and legal pluralism and for Women living under Muslim laws along with the official services for the regularization of legal documents only issued by the Embassy of Afghanistan in Ottawa. |

Women and minorities who feel they live in fear in ignorance or lack of recognition of their needs and education regarding regularization about their documentation are given the opportunity to submit questions to us in the framework of the cooperation between the Center and the Embassy to help with the various personal issues raised. | | |

The AWCM has joined the RIOCM and CABM since April! It is our pleasure to inform all our partners and members that the AWCM has become a new member of the RIOCM and CABM, both community organizations for social services in health, families, immigrants and the protection of rights and or volunteering services. |

Persian New Year 1400 (Nawruz) The Persian New Year was celebrated virtually on March 27, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Featured on the program: music, poetry, games and cultural performances which, at the beginning of spring, offer an opportunity to celebrate the feeling of belonging between the Afghan & Iranian communities. In the event we were glad to host the Minister of Gender Equality, Maryam Monsef, with so many other great leaders of different communities. Despite the pandemic, the talents of our members have been showcased in English, French & Farsi. |
