Update #10  2021

Welcome to another update from the Sturt's Steps Project Team.

Sturt's Steps a strategic project funded by Infrastructure NSW to deliver 12 elements to Corner Country NSW that will provide amenities for visitors to increase tourism to the area.

Kicked off in May 2020, it is aimed to be completed by the end of 2022.

Read below and visit our website with all the updates from the team.

The challenges of 2020 & 2021

The saying "the only constant is change" is certainly proving to be true in the last 18 months and also for the tourism industry. Jumping in and out of bookings, cancellations, staffing shortfalls, border restrictions, and much more. The good news to this is we are all in the same boat and we are not alone.

Whilst dealing with our day-to-day it is important to also focus on the future, as we all know that when we get a handle on this epidemic that traveling in Australia will be in demand once again.

With projects like Sturts Steps, we can see the future is bright for Outback NSW, and the project will not only increase visitation as we indicated it would, but also increase expenditure and add to the economy through the collaborative efforts of the region.

There are some ways the industry need to help. So with your focus on the future, put some time aside to look into these suggestions below;

ATDW

The Australian Tourism Data Warehouse is the most important database of tourism products to get your business or activity known to potential travelers. It is important you keep your listing up to date as if it expires it drops off websites and you may not even know if you are no longer being promoted on some key websites like www.visitnsw.com - so renew your listing today www.getconnected.com.au

WEBSITE ADDITIONS

To complement the service and facilities you offer tourists to the region, ensure you are now adding the extra benefit of coming to the region by seeing Sturts Steps. The more information you can provide your potential visitors the more likely they will come and we can provide imagery, logos, maps, and text to help you. Receive your Marketing Tool kit from the project team today.

GRANTS

There are a lot of grants out there right now, and as we all know grants take time to apply for, project manage, and acquit, however by linking to existing projects and collaborating with partners, there are regional opportunities as well as business ones to be had. Feel free to touch base with the project team if you are not sure where to start.

Larger than life

The Bandicoot, Bilby & Quoll made their journey to their new home in Sturt National Park and are being adored by visitors already. These sculptures by Ivan Lovatt and Brian Campbell are incredible testaments to the work being done by the Wild Deserts Project. To see more images and also the 'work in progress' images, head to the Sturts Steps Project website.

Industry Famil

Whilst we had 2 planned, we were able to get 1 in before the floods, peak season, and more COVID restrictions, and what value that provided! We have already seen an increase of awareness into new channels, feedback on key elements that have now been amended and opportunities being presented as a result.

Sculpture Trail

Pictured above is the concept drawing by Gritta Walker of the Sculpture that will be positioned in Milparinka. You can see the progress images on the website together with the Ian Marr Sculpture that has commenced for Packsaddle.

The final sculpture has been confirmed to be placed in Tibooburra paying homage to the Cameleers of the Outback.

Museums are taking form

Being constructed in Dubbo and transported to their final destination in near-complete form, the museums are progressing well. With the first delivery aiming to be in August, when work then commences on creating the interpretation tools for the inside of the facility. In Milparinka this will revolve around Sturt and Kidman, while Tibooburra will include many topics of interest.

Congratulations Tracey & Craig

Well done for the reopening of the Two-Storey Hotel in Tibooburra last week! While only a fraction of the hotel is open to the public it has been an incredible feat for the couple and they are thankful for the support around them that has allowed them to reopen! As the rest of the hotel continues the rebuild, they would like to remind everyone that due to capacity limits BOOKINGS are ESSENTIAL.

Congratulations guys and all the best with the next stages of the rebuild.
