the weekly Round-Up

Welcome!  To our new subscribers, thanks for signing up.

Shaking things up this week at the suggestion of a reader--putting our curated industry and business news up front and the hertelier highlights below. Please let me know if YOU have a preference.

hertelier round-up of interesting news about the hotel industry and business:

  • Continued ups and downs: in the U.S., CDC says masks off for vaccinated people, Europe lags though many countries are desperate to re-open for summer, and in the UK gradual unlocking and return to normalcy may be halted due to concerns about the Indian strain of COVID-19, which sadly is still raging there. Also on our radar is the conflict in Israel.
  • Possible upgrade? The pandemic is offering Europe the chance to go after more high-end tourists, according to the Financial Times, which lists the countries in southern Europe tapping into the EU's €750 billion coronavirus recovery fund to shift their model from the mass market to more upscale, sustainable travel options.
  • Blurring of business and leisure travel. Marriott CEO Tony Capuano told CNBC on Monday the distinction between business and leisure travel is fading as travelers are looking to combine trip purpose.  He also pointed to the recovery of business travel in China (up 5% over 2019) setting the expectation for what may happen in the U.S. now that the vaccine roll out has been going well.
  • Are you a lifelong learner? One of the most popular posts in the Harvard Business Review this week is about the importance of a "growth mindset" and what that looks like in practice. Great tips in there for both hiring managers and job seekers. Which ties nicely into the graphic (scroll down) by Ashly Balding of ALHI, who uses learning to help her stay motivated while the meetings business is still ramping up.

Here's what happened on hertelier:

  • While the desperate search for entry-level talent in hospitality is grabbing all the headlines, it is still very competitive to snag mid-level management jobs. These positions have not only been slower to come back, there are just fewer of them overall. We spoke with hotel HR pro Danielle Clark Cole, who gave 7 winning job search tips for management spots.
  • In F&Be, we meet Anna Frumes, owner, manager and chef at The Borland House Inn & Restaurant in Upstate New York.  She shares her journey from studying spiders, a master's in international relations at Columbia and a stint in the Peace Corps to...running an inn and restaurant. Don't miss: her secret recipe for STUFFED French Toast.
  • Have you lived or are you living now as an expat?  Maybe you can relate to this week's reader who is struggling to return home.  Advice columnist Nancy Mendelson helps her deal with reverse culture shock.
  • Before COVID-19 put the brakes on travel, overtourism was one of the biggest problems facing our industry.  As travel resumes, will we return to a world of overrun monuments, littered beaches, and gridlocked city streets? Overtourism: Lessons for a Better Future, a new book (edited by two women) from the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), sees the pandemic as a chance for a reset and offers ideas for sustainability that also retain economic benefits; read key points from the book here.

We welcome your feedback, concerns, and especially your questions.  If you have any questions about your job (or life) send them to Nancy (nancy@nemglobal.com).  Benefit from her years of experience and therapy!
