Welcome to the end of 2023. Wow, I don’t know about for you, but that seemed quick. I’ve been mindful of changing an old habit of counting down work days until the weekend. - “I can’t wait until the weekend”, and being aware of my thoughts and language in general. I started to think how with wanting to rush through five days to get to two, we are seemingly wishing our lives away. This month's title is from an Octavia Butler quote starting, "'All that you touch you change. All that you change, changes you." I know many of you have seen a lot of changes and transitions this year; I know I have. Some changes just seemed to sweep us along and some were of our own making. One thing is for sure, change is a constant. As we move into the colder months, fewer daylight hours, and see, once again, the change of seasons, we may adjust some of our practices in some ways. These could be caring for ourselves differently and also beginning to reflect on the past and make plans for the coming year. Making changes that really make a difference and move our lives to looking more how we want can be challenging, downright painful. I know, they’ve had me questioning myself this year, but I’ve always been more comfortable growing and changing. As I’ve collaborated with others to build what the Cultivate Creative Cafe space is becoming, one conversation I had with one of my closest sister friends, Sylvia, again, related to how specific I am about the words we use. The word ‘healing’ is used so much these days. Of course, I love that we are healing and understanding how to heal from so many of our experiences, but I still hear that as centering brokenness, which, for me, doesn’t feel right in all situations. The vision for the space is all encompassing. In discussing the vision of Cultivate Creative’s mission and purpose - my sister offered me the alternative word of ‘Nurturing’. Creating Nurturing Spaces - That’s the purpose and vision that we plan to build upon in 2024. I’ll talk about more of what that can look like in January. In the meantime, I wish you all plenty of joy, peace and rest in these last few weeks of 23.
