What's happening in the city... |
Juneteenth, dating back to 1865, marks the oldest nationally celebrated observance of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th that year, Union soldiers under Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing the end of the Civil War and the freedom of enslaved individuals, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In June 2021, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on June 17, 2021, officially making Juneteenth a federal holiday. This Wednesday, June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth by reflecting on the impact of slavery in our country and honoring the ongoing struggle for liberation by enslaved people and their descendants. |

Beat the Heat this Summer |
It's going to be a "scorcher" this summer! Excessive heat can lead to heat exhaustion or even heatstroke, which are serious medical conditions. Staying cool helps regulate your body temperature and reduces the risk of these illnesses. With all of the fun activities coming into full effect in the city, we here at All Points Cleaning Service want you to have all the tools you need to beat the heat! Stay Hydrated Drink water before you feel thirsty, especially if you're exercising or outside. If you're active, you might need to drink more than usual. Some recommend drinking 17–20 ounces of water before exercising, 8 ounces during warm-up, 7–10 ounces every 10–20 minutes during exercise, and 8 ounces within 30 minutes after. You can also try eating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables, watermelon, salads, and smoothies. Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar, as they can dehydrate you. Stay cool Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. You can also try keeping your skin wet with a damp sponge or spray bottle, or take cool showers. If you're indoors, you can use a fan or air conditioning to improve air circulation. During the day, keep windows, blinds, curtains, or shades closed to block direct sunlight. If you're outside, find shade, use an umbrella, or wear a hat with a brim. Limit physical activity Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day, and try to limit physical activity to cooler parts of the day. Take breaks Did you know you can overheat even if you're just watching something in direct sunlight? It's important to take breaks away from direct sunlight and heat, especially this summer. Be sun smart Use sunscreen and reapply throughout the day. |
