A quick win project

Hello all you amazing subscribers and welcome to my August newsletter. Time for sewing has been limited this month with a busy time at work, and having just finished the Lilou dress I was in the mood for a quick win project before I embark on another garment. I'd bookmarked Tilly and the Buttons' free pattern for the Fifi Eye Mask a while ago as my own mask was starting to come apart.

I've been wearing an eye mask for a few years now and found that it really improved my quality of sleep, particularly avoiding the early awakening by the sun peeking round the side of the curtains. I came across a couple of reviews on sewingpatterns.com which gave some good advice before I started. In particular one mentioned the fact that the wadding isn't secured inside the mask so could fold up when going through the wash, and another that the casing for the elastic headband was tight. This was worth knowing and changed the way I approached this pattern, and I even added a nose wire to keep more of the light out.

Click on the photo below to read the full blog post (6 mins). I never imagined there was that much to say about an eye mask, but I hacked the pattern quite a bit so explain my full process. This was the first time I'd used bias binding and I love the neat edge it gives.

Work in progress

My current project is the Friday Pattern Company's Sagebrush Top. Having now completed Love At First Stitch, I am free to roam and chose this very popular pattern as it seemed quite a simple sew, and I love the ruffle on the front and puff sleeve. I am fully aware that by the time I've finished this, our summer will be well and truly over but we've just booked a cruise for next year and I need a suitable wardrobe for what will be the first trip abroad for quite some time.

Having seen quite a few reviews of this pattern, there is a lot of ease built in and so it shouldn't really need much in the way of fitting adjustments. However, I know that I do not have a standard body shape in that my upper bust measurement is nearly 3cm larger than my full bust. I therefore made a toile which was definitely worth it as I was 8cm wider across the upper bust than the pattern allowed for going by the bust measurement. I didn't find many other people that have had to do much to this pattern, so I will document my fitting process in a blog post. I probably could have got away without having to do too much to it, but I wanted to practice fitting on this relatively easy garment. Looking forward to sharing this with you next time.
