Spring 2019 Newsletter

"Everybody's putting on a braver face, Everyone's running in the same race,
Everybody's working for those days of light,

Everyone's looking for the same release, Everybody's hoping for a mind of peace,
Everyone's working for those days of light."–Roger Daltrey

“Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.” –Doug Larson

Hi Everyone! I hope you are feeling cheerful even amid the March snow here in the mid-Atlantic. I am sure we are all looking forward to a bit more sunlight.

I'd like to share a few updates about events and projects.

Upcoming Performances

Boccherini Quintet - March 10

I am looking forward to once again performing with Satori Chamber Ensemble. The upcoming concert at Congregation Keneseth Israel in Allentown will include Luigi Boccherini's Quintet in D Major for guitar and strings, two arias for flute and guitar by Francis Kleynjans, a flute quartet by Mozart and Mendelssohn's String Quartet op. 44 no.2. For details and ticket information, visit www.satori-chambermusic.org.

Fairfield Duo in Lancaster - April 10

Nora Suggs and I will be featured for the 2018-19 Lancaster Catholic High School Concert and Lecture Series. Our duo seeks interesting and diverse music from many countries and time periods, often asking our audiences to stamp their musical passports. The program for this concert will include music from Japan, France, Spain and the US. This concert is free and open to the public. View the ad and contact information here.

Musical Talks

This spring's performances include several lectures in addition to concerts. Most recently, I spoke about Manuel Ponce, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Agustin Barrios and the idea of legacy during a pre-concert talk for the John E. Marlow Guitar Series.

Earlier in January, I gave a presentation for the Boulanger Initiative, a newly-founded non-profit in the Washington DC area whose mission is to promote music composed by women through performance, education and commissions. I spoke about several great women in the history of classical guitar who were players as well as composers. During Women's History Month, I will give similar talks at the Walkersville and Washington County Free Libraries in Maryland (See program description below). These educational events are presented in partnership with Marlow Guitar International.

In April, I will travel to Canada for the Toronto Guitar Weekend where I will give a talk celebrating Ida Presti as a solo performer and composer of works for solo guitar. Other speakers and performers for the festival include Berta Rojas, Mariette Stephenson, Bokung Byun and Brent Crawford. I am very excited to be included in this wonderful group of musicians.

Musical Talk: Women in the History of Classical Guitar

In a presentation that includes discussion, listening and live performance, Dr. Candice Mowbray leads audiences through an appreciative look at the accomplishments and contributions of women as players and composers throughout the history of the classical guitar. Beginning with Francesca Caccini and ending with the Grand Dames of the 20th century, this informative presentation both enlightens and entertains–and you don't have to be a guitarist to enjoy learning about great players and music.

Kris Thornton's Environmental Portraits

Photographer Kris Thornton has begun a new series of portraits in which he attempts to capture the spirit of his subject in connection with the surrounding environment. In my case, the environment is a practice studio and I think Kris did an incredible job at capturing a sense of peace at the center of a whirlwind. The photo was the result of blending 20 different photos to make the final scene. The sheet music in the photo is real and each page was photographed separately. Good luck to Kris as the series develops. You can see more photos by Kris at his website and on Instagram. Please feel free to send him a note of support.
