Depending on where in the world you live, the arrival of May might mean spring has already turned to summer and temperatures are already rising (although, hopefully not as fast as the cost of living!) Here in Uppsala however, things get off to a slightly slower and cooler start. Still, the signs of summer can already be seen in the lighter clothes, happier faces and more relaxed pace of pedestrians as they stroll outside the windows of Yocha Studio in the city’s central Gågatan walking area. Another sure sign of summer’s imminent arrival is the cherry blossoms blooming across the city. Especially for those who have lived in Asia, this is a heartwarming reminder that summer has finally arrived. In Japan the Cherry Blossom or Sakura season is such an important annual event that there is even a special word to describe taking time out to view this beautiful but transient spectacle – hanami (花見) – or “flower viewing”. Here in Uppsala’s famous botanical gardens and quiet parks, students taking a break from study can be seen relaxing under beautiful pink and white canopies, perhaps unaware that they are taking part in an ancient Japanese pastime! |

And of course, don’t forget that here in Sweden the last Sunday in May – the 29th this year - is Mors Dag, or Mothers’ Day. And what better way to celebrate those most important of people than with a unique gift from Asia, or perhaps a place on one of our Kung Fu tea workshops? And if you’re still not sure, remember there’s always a Yocha Studio gift card! May also marks our second full month of business at the Yocha Studio store and we’re very happy to say our small team has expanded over the past few weeks. It’s always hard work starting a new business, especially such an unusual one, but the rewards are more than worth it! It could be a first-time customer saying, “I’ve never seen anything like this before…” or “This is what Uppsala needs!” or one of our growing number of regulars bringing a friend to try our Kung Fu tea for the first time. Or simply the pleasure we feel when we introduce both locals and people from further afield to the fascinating world of real Asian culture. Because Yocha was never meant to be a place to just grab a quick coffee on the way to work (although you’re welcome to do so!) but to allow our guests to relax and learn about a different way and pace of doing things. Whether it’s slowly browsing through our unique design pieces, savouring a sip of real oolong tea, or relishing a traditional mooncake, we want you to enjoy the experience just as much as we do! In a world where the emphasis always seems to be on faster and faster, why not take some time to relax, reset and enjoy a uniquely calming Asian cultural experience right in the heart of Sweden? |

And speaking of experiences, we recently held our first Kung Fu tea workshop. Places were sold out in a day and to say we were overwhelmed by the interest and enthusiasm of those who attended is an understatement – indeed there was so much enthusiasm that it went on far longer than originally intended! Thanks to all who participated and especially to our local Swedish tea expert who gave a uniquely Swedish perspective on this ancient art. Given the interest, we are now organizing a series of workshops on tea appreciation as well as looking at other areas of Asian culture for further workshops over the summer. The next on the schedule will be dedicated to activities surrounding the famous Chinese Dragon Boat Festival (which falls on June 3rd this year). To find out more about this and other workshops make sure to follow us on Instagram for the latest updates! Another development we should mention this month is our plan to introduce a more recent Asian tradition which has swept the world - real Bubble tea. Also known as Boba tea, this sweet, creamy, milk tea with its characteristic tapioca balls and varied recipes has spread from its original home in Taiwan to become a truly pan-Asian favourite. So, watch our Instagram for news on when you can try this exciting addition to our range! |

Finally, for those who read Swedish, this interview in Uppsala Tidning with Yocha founder, Zoe Thompson, might help to give you an idea of what Yocha Studio is all about! And as usual, for anyone not lucky enough to live in Uppsala, a reminder that our online store at www.yochastudio.com is open around the clock with all the design items and furniture from our physical store available at the touch of a (few) buttons… So, till next month, may your May be as merry as May may be!
