BAM Orlando Build A Bridge Competition Recap

BAM working in partnership with CBA architects, hosted a bridge building competition for kids ranging from middle school through high school on March 26th. This dynamic event challenged the kids to flex their abilities with design and think outside the box. Along with the help of BAM board members and volunteers, the kids were able to bring their designs to life. After designing their bridges, the kids had to walk the groups through their design process. Judges graded on creativity and overall strength of the bridges, with prizes given to the top three competitors.

Last week we finished filming for our two upcoming 8 minute mini-documentaries on Isabel Roberts and Ida Annah Ryan, architects who practiced here in the 1920’s. There were only a handful of women architecture firms in the nation at that time. Surprisingly, one of those was in Orlando. These women were the first generation of female architects to be allowed in architecture schools. We are lucky to be invited to work with the Grace Arts Center in Fort Lauderdale to bring their story to light. GAC has a grant from the Florida Historical Resources Board for some short videos of people of the past around the state of Florida, they have great camera crew, producers and editors. We hope to finish our Micro-Docs by June so watch for announcements. In the second video we interviewed Olive Horning from the Veterans Memorial Library one of Ryan and Roberts commissions. We hope to premier our short documentaries there as well as multiple locations in Orlando, and look forward to sharing the lives of these amazing women.

Memorial Library is one of the best remaining works, and most accessible to the public of the work by these women architects. The Veteran’s Memorial Library has just reopened to the public after their Covid closure, so stop in and visit the now-named St. Cloud Heritage Museum, 1012 Massachusetts Avenue, St. Cloud, FL 34769, open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Arrangements may be made for groups or individuals to visit the museum at other times. Their staff can direct you to other St Cloud buildings by this Firm.

The new OFApedia page under our Buildings tab, on the Veteran’s Memorial library, is available for you to learn more and view photos of this historic building.
