WARD 3 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: WALTER VASQUEZ The New Annapolis International Market & Sin Fronteras Cafe |
May 1, 2021, we observed the public holiday in El Salvador, “International Workers’ Day”, or “Dia del Trabajo”. As many of you know, Mr. Walter Vasquez, a very successful business owner here in Ward 3, is from El Salvador. Walter was featured in The Capital newspaper on January 3, 2016, as a restaurateur and business owner, with the moniker “People to Watch”—“born and raised in El Salvador and lived in Miami before he moved to Annapolis”. |
Walter and I have chatted on many occasions in the past; however, after our very productive meeting on January 28, 2020 for just about 3 hours, it was evident to me that Walter is very proud of his heritage and roots, as well as his very successful family and accomplishments. Therefore, we “Spotlight!” Mr. Walter Vasquez in the month of May as a pillar in our Annapolis community. And we are very proud to call him “One of our sons of Ward 3”. |
Here is the photo where Mayor Buckley and I attended the grand opening/ribbon cutting for Walter’s “International Market” in Ward 3 at 1927 West Street, on January 12, 2021 (next door to McDonald’s). He has a “Little Sin Fronteras” establishment there as well. And please patronize his long-standing Sin Fronteras Cafe at 2129 Forest Drive in the heart of Ward 3. As Walter indicated in his e-mail to me on March 9, 2020: “Thank you for reaching out to me and I sincerely believe our meeting was very positive.” And I agree! | | |
And as a celebration of Cinco de Mayo on May 5th, and our entire Latino/Latinx/Hispanic/Spanish-speaking community, we are also highlighting on Facebook in the month of May the following guests on my City TV program, “Watershed Moments”— |
I was so very honored to have been invited to the Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Sylvia Helen Kirby McKinney and Mr. Kirby Joseph McKinney, Sr. on April 23, 2021 at the First Christian Community Church of Annapolis. While Jimmy Stewart made the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” famous nationally in 1946 (and it’s still being shown every Christmas), Mrs. Sylvia and Kirby made it famous for us here in Annapolis. Their quotes in |
their Obituaries epitomize each of their lives. Mrs. Sylvia: “WORK FOR THE LORD. The work is hard. The hours are long. The pay is low. But the retirement benefits are out of this world.” Kirby: “The closer you get to death. The closer you get to life. Life can be a series of death. You live to die. And you die to live.” We will all truly miss them. May God bring peace to their family and rest to their souls. Amen. |

"Did You Know?" The first piece of legislation that Alderwoman Pindell Charles voted on as a City Councilwoman was Resolution R-40-13, honoring and celebrating the life of South African President and Martyr Nelson Mandela who had just passed away. This is evidence that her career as an Alderwoman started off as a Social Justice Advocate. |
