Named one of the 50 Best Kids' Books of All Time by Good Housekeeping

Jolie LOVES strawberries - and she’s on an unstoppable (and hilarious) mission to grow her own food from seedling to table in this colorful introduction to the joy of growing the popular perennial.

Through Jolie’s comical scrapbook-style journal entries, young readers will learn how she convinces the “old people” (aka her parents) to let her grow her own strawberries. Growing strawberries is a lot of work and responsibility, but Jolie is ready with the help of her faithful rabbit Munchy! Together they find out just how delicious, rewarding, and sometimes complicated it can be to grow your own food.

Creating a garden calendar and notebook, how strawberries grow, what pests to look out for in a garden, why ladybugs are helpful, and how a good gardener takes care of strawberry plants are all explained in this fun and educational story. Informational backmatter includes tips on growing strawberries, an explanation of integrated pest management for greener, safer gardening - and even tips for how to find a pick your own strawberry patch near you.

This story makes a great read before a family trip to a strawberry patch, a garden store, or in a classroom talking about healthy eating and growing your own food.

Review

“A multi-layered story about a resourceful girl who is determined to grow strawberries received the highest scores from parents and kids of all the books tested. A series of handwritten diary entries, along with a bit of regular text, chronicle (often with humor) the girl’s efforts to convince her parents that she’s mature and hard-working enough to raise berries. ‘This book explores themes of responsibility, passion and entrepreneurship while explaining the process of growing one's own food and the lifecycle of a plant,’ says judge Sandhya Nankani, founder of The Story Seeds Podcast.” – Good Housekeeping listing, 2022 Best Kids’ Books Awards

A Delicious Treat!
A young girl sets out on a fun-filled mission to grow strawberries despite her parents initial hesitation. Anderson's text emphasizes the hard work and dedication that goes into achieving a goal, along with growing your own harvest. The book is setup as a series of humorous diary entries that make the topic of farming and harvesting accessible to young children. Sinquett's bright and detailed illustrations add additional layers of personality and meaning to the story. A perfect blend of fun and informative, for strawberry lovers and beyond! The detailed back matter makes this a great addition to classrooms and libraries, too!

I bought this book for my grandson who has a strawberry plant in a pot on the patio. He is only four years old, but he loves to eat the few strawberries that he harvests. This book is about an older girl who is trying to convince her parents to allow her to have a strawberry patch. She shows her parents that she is responsible. She raises money to buy the plants. She learns that the plants cost more than she thought they would. It is a great book for teaching life skills.! I would recommend it for an older child, perhaps ages seven to ten.

Now I want some strawberries.... mmm..... What an adorable story, beautifully brought to life by the one and only, Jaclyn Sinquett! And that bunny! Oh, I'm melting! I have no green thumb, not even a green pinkie, but after reading this book, I even feel like I can grow some stuff.... :)

My daughter loves strawberries so when I saw this book, I knew she had to have it. It's presented in such a cute way and I absolutely love the accuracy!

I grew up on a vegetable/fruit farm. My family grew 20 acres of strawberries for wholesale, retail, and pick your own. I know how a strawberry plant grows and produces. I also know the work involved in the years long process! The author accurately portrays the work side, even 12 plants will require much work after the first year. However, the first year there is little to no yield with strawberries. You should remove all the flowers and just let the plants set out runners. In subsequent years, there will be a good yield if you take care of berries: water them, weed them, fertilize them. So A+ for work, and a Pass for growing them. The determination of the young girl is very admirable and should inspire other young people to work hard for success.

Good story but hard to follow with a date calendar on every page. The story could stand alone. This was the 2023 Ag in the Classroom book.
