How Fairy Creek is Far From Being Saved

Once upon a time, there was a premier who pretended that saving the magnificent old-growth forests of BC might be of some interest for him.  “We are embarking on the journey to transform forestry.” he declared to the media while announcing two-year old-growth deferrals in the Fairy Creek and Central Walbran regions. These deferrals came on the heels of the Pacheedaht, Dididaht and Huu-ay-aht Declaration, and backtracked on the Intentions Paper timeline of 2023 for an OG strategy announced just days before. 

The good citizens of BC heard him announce the two-year deferrals and breathed a collective sigh of relief. Fairy Creek was saved! But hey, what’s that? The Rainforest Flying Squad refuses to stand down? Didn’t the premier just ride in on a shiny white horse and come to the rescue to save Fairy Creek?

They are monuments

Filled with the wisdom of the past

Every single leaf is a sign of determination

Every single branch tells you to have hope

Trees’ hearts are like human hearts

They are our best friends

When we are lonely

And devastated

They are with us

They kiss you when you are scared

They remind you when you forget

Without them we wouldn’t be able to thrive

They are our rescuers

The first ones couldn’t live

A Call To Provincial & Federal Governments

With the new federal protected areas funding, the BC NDP government has just been handed the keys to ensure that much of the grandest, most endangered old-growth forests in BC get protected. The $2.3 billion in federal funding dispersed across the country doesn’t go far enough to save all of BC’s old-growth, but it would go a long way to protect a significant part of what remains.

This is a golden opportunity for the BC NDP government to quickly move to end the War in the Woods by embracing that federal funding.

Getting Back to the Garden at Fairy Creek

The only thing you need to bring to Fairy Creek is your presence. We are stardust, we are golden, and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.

The Pacheedaht Council, by the way, encourages peaceful protest outside the injunction zone of 50 metres from active logging. The Council’s statement was required to fulfil their obligations under a colonial “hush money” contract they had to sign to at least get $300,000 for the destruction of their ancestral forest. 

That’s all they’ll receive from the roughly $400,000,000 street value of TFL 46. A bag of beads and a keg of whiskey all over again.

On June 16, the CRD’s Environmental Services Committee passed a motion to request the Province to end land application of biosolids at Hartland. This motion will be submitted for approval to the full CRD Board on July 14.

This motion was a result of public pressure brought by a consortium of environmental groups known as the Peninsula Biosolids Coalition, which includes the Mount Work Coalition.

It brings full circle to an original decision by the CRD Board in 2011 to ban land disposal of biosolids anywhere in the Region. That ban continues to this day with the notable exception of the Hartland landfill.

The Mount Work Coalition and Creatively United support the two motions to end land application of biosolids and to determine if they can be safely disposed of through gasification. We encourage members to notify the CRD Board by signing this petition.
