Healthcare Panel: Why CPE?

Following the Keynote presentation by Beverly Beltramo, this panel features three speakers who have experience with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). This training is usually required for chaplains and spiritual caregivers working in the healthcare industry. The panel will consider what CPE is, what it offers, what the challenges are, and why Hindus should pursue this path. Moderated by
NAHCA Vice Chair Shama Mehta.

Aarti Ahuja is a hospital chaplain at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was born and raised in a Hindu family in India. Aarti completed her Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Internship and Residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio in 2018. She graduated with a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry from Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) in Detroit, Michigan in 2020. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctor of Ministry at ETS. Aarti is married and lives with her husband in Detroit, MI. In her free time, she enjoys movies, bike riding, and reading.

Allegra Wiprud is a current CPE student at Yale New Haven Hospital and a joint Master of Divinity and Master in Environmental Management (MDiv/MEM) candidate at Yale Divinity School and Yale School of the Environment, where she is studying multifaith spiritual care in the context of the climate crisis. She has worked directly in the environmental field and in Hindu and interfaith organizations including the Interfaith Center of New York, the Center for Spiritual Imagination, the Sacred Ecology Forum, and Govardhan Eco Village. Allegra has been a Chaitanya Vaisnava practitioner since 2011.

Deepti Scharf is currently pursuing an MA from St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute in Baltimore, MD. She recently completed healthcare chaplaincy clinical training with four units of CPE internships at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD, the Wakebrook Behavioral Health Facility at UNC Chapel Hill, the York Hospital in York, PA, and the Caron Addiction Treatment Facility in PA with clinical hours at Gilchrist Hospice in Baltimore.

Shama Mehta, Panel Moderator

Shama Mehta was born in India and now calls southeastern Michigan home. A lifelong practicing Hindu, Shama is a board-certified chaplain through the Association of Professional Chaplains and currently works as a staff chaplain at Beaumont Health. She is also a qualified medical interpreter. Born into a Shaivite sampradaya, her personal perspective and practice of Hinduism is Advaita Vedanta – Non Duality. She holds a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (Interfaith Chaplaincy). Shama also represents Hinduism on local interfaith panels and speaks on a variety of topics as they relate to Hinduism.

A note from a partnering organization, Chaplaincy Innovation Lab:

The Chaplaincy Innovation Lab (CIL) is collaborating with the Fetzer Institute to support and build networks of spiritual care providers of color. Since January, the Lab has run Conversation Circles as a means for chaplains to connect. The Lab has expanded to four meeting times per circle and opened a new affinity group for Asian American and Pacific Islander chaplains. These are free to join and new applications are now being accepted. Chaplains of color, from all sectors, are encouraged to learn more and sign up here:

As we are planning our NAHCA 2021 Annual Conference, we will be suspending webinars for March and April.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference!
