The Irish Earls of Granard Forbes of Granard in Ireland was the result of the “Plantation of Ireland” due to English, Irish, and Scottish conflicts in the 17th century. In 1620, Sir Arthur Forbes, son of William Forbes of Corse, was granted by "the commission of King James I., for planting the country," 1,268 acres in Counties Leitrim and Longford, including a barony called Castle Forbes. Sir Arthur became a naturalized Irishman, or as it was then called "a free denizen of the country," through a patent granted at Dublin, April 1st, 1622. On September 26th, 1628, Sir Arthur Forbes was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia, devised to “plant” new colonies “between our Colonies of New England and Newfoundland, to be known as New Scotland.” The current Earl of Granard is Peter Arthur Edward Hastings Forbes. The Earl was born in 1957 and resides in the family seat, Castleforbes. Learn more here: https://www.clan-forbes.org/granard |

The Raid of Ruthven After Queen Mary of Scotland was forced to abdicate in 1567, many powerful Scottish lords insisted that her son James VI be raised as a member of the Protestant Church of Scotland, the Kirk. However, he came under the influence French Catholic Esmé Stewart, Sieur d'Aubigny, first cousin of James's father Lord Darnley and future Earl of Lennox. In 1582, William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie, and several other Protestant lords abducted the 16-year-old King James VI and demanded a pure Protestant regime, that had been approved by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Several other Protestant lords joined with Ruthven, including John, Master of Forbes and son of William 7th Lord Forbes. In May 1584, Ruthven was tried, convicted of treason, and beheaded at Stirling Castle. On May 10, 1584, the Privy Council, demanded that “William Lord Forbes and John Master of Forbes to surrender the houses and fortalices of Drummynour” under pain of treason. They refused and they were issued a summons of treason by an Act of Parliament on August 20, 1584. John, the Master of Forbes, fled Scotland and lived abroad for two years. Major Branches of the House of Forbes Sir John “with the Black Lip” Forbes, who died in about 1386, had four legitimate sons. The eldest son was Alexander who became the first Lord Forbes sometime before 1445 and started the line of the Lords Forbes which remains today. The second one was William who inherited from his father the barony of Kynaldy and from his wife the estate of Pitsligo. The third son was John who married the heiress of Tolquhon. The cadet families included Culloden, site of the Jacobite battle in 1746. The fourth son was Alistair who married the heiress of Brux. One of the cadets of this branch was Towie, owner of Corgarff Castle. Alexander, first Lord Forbes, had three sons, the first of whom, William, called “Grey Willie,” was the third Lord Forbes; the second son was Duncan who founded the Forbes of Corsindae; and the third son was Patrick who founded the line of Forbes of Corse. A cadet family of Corsindae was Monymusk, which was known for its merchants, bankers, and scientists. The Forbeses of Corse included the wealthy merchant William Forbes who made an enormous fortune and built Craigievar Castle. Clan Chief Y-DNA Origins and Variations The Forbes chiefly Y-DNA line is included in the FamilyTreeDNA Forbes Surname Group. Modern genetic research techniques can trace his haplogroup M-269 as far back as the Paleolithic Age on the Russian Steppes. In the Bronze Age, the Bell Beaker people brought the variation R-L21 to the island of Britain. These were thought to be the ancestors of the Picts, from whom the chiefly line most likely descended. The marker DF-13 is the next mutation which is associated with Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. More precise results can be determined through the Big-Y 700 test. This is more reliable since it tracks detailed single-nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs. The smaller sampling of the Y-37 tests can only identify broad haplogroups through short tandem repeats (STR). This genetic research will help you trace your lineage since the use of surnames in were not prevalent in Scotland until after 1200.
