MI Sport and Recreation Newsletter           11 December 2020

Check out our latest updates online www.abcmiddleisland.com

As we were preparing this newsletter we received the news that we would have to close our sporting facilities for two weeks 10 to 23 December due to tightening restrictions from the government relating to COVID-19. Based on previous suspensions earlier this year there is a high chance this closure will be longer than two weeks. This is not the Christmas we were hoping for and sadly we will have to cancel/postpone the courses in this period. Students signed up for affected courses will be contacted by email as and when we have updates from the relevant government departments.

It's not all bad news though and in this newsletter we will look at whats coming up in early 2021!

2021 Training Course Schedules

As with previous closures we will continue to publish our schedules and still allow you to make bookings. This allows us to get up and running again as soon as we get the green light from the government.

Aberdeen Racing Academy

On the 28 & 29 November the ABC hosted the Southside Regatta. With over 100 competitors on two different race courses it was a busy weekend at Middle Island.

We also saw some great performances from the ARA Team. Four ARA sailors in the top 10 of the Optimist Main Fleet was a result were are all proud of.

It was another good year in the 29er class for ARA sailors including, ARA sailors who have recently been recruited into the Hong Kong National Squad.

Southside Regatta was just the second ranking regatta of 2020 after so many COVID related interruptions this year. Each of the sailors had their own goals for this event and for some it was their first ranking regatta, including Toby Ouyang who was the youngest at 8yrs old.

The team were supported on the water by Head Coach Daniel Dolega and Coach Jono Slattery, as assisted by Coach Ting Chan as Richard was kept busy with Race Management at our home event.

Watersports Training Section

The past 24 months has seen great developments at Middle Island, particularly with the dinghy fleet modernisation and the training courses on offer. During 2020 the participation levels on our Training Courses has seen tremendous growth.

Keeping up with this development has been no mean feat and to recognise the hard work and better reflect the actual roles and responsibilities we are pleased to announce that Howie Suen has been promoted to Watersports Training Manager.

To enable us to develop to the next phase we are also pleased to welcome Vickie Tsui into the new role of Watersports Training Assistant. Vickie joined us in November and has quickly been learning the ropes. You may have already met, spoken or emailed Vickie but we are pleased to officially welcome her here.

We are very proud of how the programme has developed in the past two years and we are looking forward to the next phase of development and an exciting 2021!
