LAKESHORE FOOD CLUB

May 2020 Newsletter

LOVE.   FEED.   CONNECT.

One of my favorite feel good book series is Jan Karon's The Mitford Years. Throughout the books Mitford's mayor, Esther Cunningham, had a slogan - "Mitford Takes Care of Its Own." As I read through this series, I longed to live in a place like Mitford - a place that takes care of its own.

Well, here I am twenty years later and I know my family and I have found our own Mitford in Mason County, Michigan.

We really are a community that Takes Care of Its Own.

The outpouring of support our community has given to us over the last eight weeks has been amazing! We are so thankful for each and every person and organization that has stepped in and helped carry the weight of caring for those in need in Mason County. Together we have served well over 700 unique Mason County households. What I am most thankful for is, even though our membership model and our core value of consumer choice had to be put on hold for the time being, our mission of providing fresh, healthy foods has not wavered. Because of our very generous donors, we have been able to give fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats in every bag we have distributed!

It is my hope that we can enter into our new normal and welcome members and volunteers back soon but until that day arrives -

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Wash Your Hands and continue to be Mason County, the community that takes care of our own!

DEEP ROOTS MASON COUNTY

The Food Club is partnering with MSU Extension, the LiveWell Mason Food Council and area farmers and growers to bring gardeners into conversation and community during this unique time in history. Welcome to Deep Roots Mason County! LFC is excited to be working together to offer this FREE interactive gardening experience to our community. Deep Roots will be sharing educational videos plus garden and nutrition tips on our Facebook page weekly during the growing season. Community members can join in by sharing your garden photos, family meals, favorite recipes and more throughout the summer. There will be even drawings for items to help you in your gardening and kitchen adventures (thanks to our supporters at the Margaret Shaw Memorial Fund!).

The season kicks off on May 22 and May 26 - you can receive a 'grab and go gardening kit' with seeds, plants and info to help you grow. If you'd like to register to receive a kit, please fill out a request form here.

REOPENING PLANS

As of May 12, there is no date for the reopening of the grocery/member choice model at the Food Club.

Staff is working with volunteers and other stakeholders to develop a plan that will be safe and sustainable for the long term, as the virus is expected to impact daily life for many months to come.

Please continue to check www.lakeshorefoodclub.org for the latest updates in these quickly-changing times.

WISHLIST

During this time, the best way to support LFC is through a financial contribution. With retail stores running low on many staple items, LFC encourages our community of supporters to stay home and safe - and leave the grocery shelves stocked for shoppers.

To make a donation, please visit www.lakeshorefoodclub.org and click on the Donate button at the top. Checks can also be mailed to Lakeshore Food Club, 920 E. Tinkham Ave., Ludington, MI 49431
