A resource for students and teachers, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes.

Story Corps, Applying Differentiation, Stories humanize, What's your story?

Happy '360' Friday! Here are this week's resources, quote, and question.

Student Resource

Story Corps

WARNING! These animated short stories from StoryCorps may cause your eyes to water! "StoryCorps is committed to the idea that everyone has an important story to tell and that everyone’s story matters. Our mission: to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time. Since our founding in 2003, we’ve helped more than 640,000 people across the country have meaningful conversations about their lives. These recordings are collected in the U.S. Library of Congress and in our online archive which is now the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered." Click here to go to StoryCorps Animated Shorts. The video below is an animated short story titled "Lessons from Lourdes".

Student Tip

The graphics, audio, and text of these animated shorts make them a great resource for developing listening and reading, as well as serve as excellent examples of how to write and tell your own story. Watch several of the animated shorts and then prepare to tell your own story to someone by first writing it down. You can also interview family and friends to learn more about their lives.

Teacher Resource

Applying Differentiation

The following video is a segment of a webinar where I discuss how to use StoryCorps with ESOL students toward differentiated instruction (starts at minute 46:28).

Teacher Tip

After watching the video segment below, peruse the StoryCorps Animated Shorts website and select a story that you think your students would enjoy and maybe even relate to. Think of how you could apply the methods of differentiation that I discuss in the video. After preparing and teaching the activity, ask them to view more stories on their own to serve as a model for sharing their own stories.

Quote

“Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. But stories can also repair that broken dignity.”

- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Question

Whose story do you need to listen to? Who needs to hear your story?

Until next week,

Dr. Yaz

p.s. Let's try to listen to at least the "other" side's story.
