June is a time of celebration! The school year is coming to an end and many teens and young adults are graduating. As positive and exciting as these transitions are, they can be riddled with uncertainty, stress, and self- doubt. These transitions can be especially hard for teens and young adults who struggle with low self -esteem, anxiety, and depression.
What makes these transitions so challenging?
· Predictable and established routines are being dismantled.
· Social networks are changing- friends may be parting.
· Academic and/or professional pressures and expectations are increasing.
Thankfully, there are some things you can do to support your teen as they navigate these transitions.
· Create time and space to have conversations about the topics listed above.
· Remind your teen that it is normal to feel both worry and excitement during these transitions.
· Encourage your teen to maintain predictable routines for the summer and practice making some transitions to the new routine before the change comes.
· Remind your teen of all the transitions they’ve already navigated successfully in their lives (going to camp, starting each school year, moving).
