Updates from the Studio

So far 2023 has been full of projects, clients, and experiences that have pushed me outside my comfort zone... and we're only a month and a half into the year. Two of those comfort zone-defying projects are featured below.

A special hello to new subscribers who signed up for this newsletter at my Valentine's markets over the weekend or who recently made an online purchase. Welcome!

BUNKER ELEMENTARY MURAL UPDATE

Last month, I announced that I was working on a mural that would be installed in the brand new STEAM Lab at Bunker Elementary in Muskegon, MI. The AlphaPanels were transported to the school, and on January 31st I had the opportunity to work on my final touch-ups onsite! Everything is now mounted to the wall and safely protected by plexiglass. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to create my first large-scale mural, and I hope my work brings joy and inspiration to the kids.

Thank you to all the collaborators and facilitators who made it possible for me to bring the design to life: Lions and Rabbits Center for the Arts, Muskegon Public Schools, Pure Architects, and The Christman Company; plus all of the individual people who contributed to or assisted with the project.

project/EVENT SPOTlight

On March 23 and 24, I will be providing visual accompaniment to local musician Jordan Hamilton  during a concert in the Grand Rapids Public Museum's Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium. Before Studio Hromi began, I worked at GRPM as the Planetarium & Theater Manager (a career that spanned five years!) and Concerts Under the Stars was a series of events that I actually started and coordinated during my time there. It has been a delight to see them continue under the current planetarium leadership, and an even bigger delight to be invited back as one of this year's visual artists. Though it was once my job, it's been 3+ years at this point since I've done any fulldome video production (or animation in general) and I've already had a lot of fun as I've started to dust off those skills while preparing for the show. I might even share some snippets on Instagram as things progress, so keep an eye out for that if you follow me there!

About Concerts Under the Stars:

Concerts Under the Stars are immersive fulldome concert experiences highlighting local musicians and visual artists. Local West Michigan bands perform their music, enhanced by original video art projected onto the planetarium’s 50-foot dome. Musicians and visual artists collaborate to weave together an exclusive immersive concert experience that has quickly become a staple of the underground West Michigan music scene.

About This Event:

If you're in Grand Rapids, Concerts Under the Stars in general are not to be missed. Jordan and I will be closing out the 2023 season, and tickets have been selling out fast for all of the shows so far. Music starts at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. The show consists of two sets with a short intermission in between. Refreshments, beer, and other beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $20, with discounted pricing of $16 for GRPM members, and can be purchased here.

UPCOMING MARKETS

I have one pop-up next month where you can find me out in the world: from 8am-2pm on March 31st I'll be celebrating my Golden Birthday at Stovetop Roasters by slinging my wares and sharing coffee and conversations with anybody who stops by. Full details can be found at studiohromi.com/events. You can also shop online at studiohromi.com/shop and while supplies last at the following retail locations: Grand Rapids Public Museum Curiosity Shop, Scorpion Hearts Club, and Zabház.

As always, Instagram is the best way to keep up with all of my goings-on and behind-the-scenes goodies, but you can follow me on any of the platforms below. I also recently re-joined Tumblr, where I plan to occasionally write longer blog posts about projects, process, and works-in-progress.
